Oliver 60 heating up

What kind of gauge did you get? Universal? Or original type cold/work/hot gauge?
I went out and put my temp gauge through rigorous testing. I pulled the temp sensor out and heated water in a can to various temperatures. I used a kitchen thermometer to take temps on the water. The gauge moved starting at 170, at 180 it hit work range, at boiling it hit the hot range. So the gauge seems to be working properly.

I am starting to think that maybe since I didn't put the thermostat in yet that it doesn't get hotter than 170 since the coolant is constantly circulating. This is why my temp gauge won't move. I plan to put the thermostat in tomorrow and see if that changes anything with the temp gauge when I run the tractor.

Any thoughts?

Generally not having a thermostat will cause it to overheat because the water travels too fast through the radiator. It's a gradual heat up like you're experiencing. The thermostat provides restriction and the water spends a little more time in the radiator, cooling down.

Also, you may not have enough coolant in the system which is why it isn't registering.
