So i posted a couple of days ago about asking if it would work to ground it then connect a jumper directly to the starter and people said it would work....but it didn't not even a spark. engine not stuck. . it is a 6v Oliver 77 i found in the weeds at my family farm. sitting for 20+ years. the wiring is bad because of mice which is why i am trying to start it this way. AND yes i know make sure the tractor is in neutral before doing it. thanks in advance.

Pull the starter off and hook a 12 volt battery to it ground doesn't matter. Hook one side to the case of the starter and then touch the other side to the stud for starting. Put your foot on it or some such so it doesn't jump. If it doesn't spin up good chance it is bad

The method that Old mentioned should tell you if the starter is good or bad. And you might want to hook the battery connections up first and hook the jumpers to the starter last so the sparks are not on top of the battery which could possibly make it explode.
As a side note, my nearest starter/generator/alternator rebuilder is over 90 minutes away. He's the grumpiest guy that I've ever met and he isn't open on Saturday. My last trip to him was for a generator 6V to 12V conversion. He put that wrong voltage regulator on it which meant I had to drive an extra round trip to get it to work properly.
Some of the chain stores allow you to "send it off" to be rebuilt, but the last one that I experienced took 4 months longer than what they promised.
