A water pump kit should return the pump to ?as-new? mechanical working condition. A used ?working? pump may not be so much better than your current one. Does the kit include a new fan shaft? Is the housing damaged? Cost difference? Your choice, really. Might even depend on whether you consider yourself an engineer or just a fitter.

When I refurbed the pump on my 90 (a later model with the carbon disc seal) I simply bought in suitable oilite bearings (required modifying), had a carbon seal turned up at work and used a modified electrical conduit pipe seal somewhere, as I recall. That was before the internet was available for international purchase or help, so I was very much ?on my own? with a relatively rare tractor in the UK.

I took my 80 water pumps to a machine shop. The shafts were worn, they made new ones. They pressed out the bushings and made new ones. The new bushings had holes drilled in them that lined up with oil channels in the housing. I plugged the oil hole in the head and replaced the oil line fitting in the pump with a grease fitting. Works much better than the original oil set-up. For pump packing, on one I used oakum (don't know if that's the correct spelling) on one and the other, I found an oil seal that fit snuggly in the housing and over the shaft. Then tighten the nut (just snug)against the seal. Use water pump lube in the radiator. They have been in the tractors 7 and 8 years. No problems so far.
