Oliver 880 diesel

I pull in a few local fairs, no money involved. I would like to get another few hp out of this tractor. Mechanic told me that it is getting plenty of fuel but needs more air. Would a different intake manifold help and is there one from another model that would just bolt on? Other suggestions? Thanks.

What rpms are you running right now? Roosa or bosch pump? If its factory settings I would get the rpms up to 21-2200. After that there are alot of options to increase power but you will need to take the engine apart to do so and spend some money. Congrats on running a diesel, most guys are too ignorant to realize oliver diesels pull well they just need the right parts and proper tuning.

1958, Roosa Master, pump and injectors were rebuilt. Turns just below 2000 rpm. Lots of black smoke when the going gets tough. I know I could offset grind the crank and get different rods and pistons but that sounds like a lot of money to pull for fun. Just want to make the red tractors work a little harder. Thanks.

Lots of black smoke when it takes a load like your mechanic says, means that it is getting plenty of fuel and needs more air.

Open up the intake. Either a very low restriction breather or no breather. ( no not a good idea in dusty conditions). Be sure intake tube is as large or larger diameter than manifold. Keep intake tube as straight as possible, no unnecessary bends. See if a later model intake with larger holes will bolt to your engine. Anything you can do to increase air flow and reduce restriction is a plus.

Many years ago, when I pulled my 88 diesel, I used to put a little propane in the intake manifold through the 1/8? pipe plug. Used a little throwaway tank like for camp stoves. Very inexpensive boost. Never dyno?d it, though.

For pulling days could you leave the oil out of the air cleaner cup? Do your pulling rules allow you to disconnect the air cleaner entirely?

At what point does excess fuel reduce power?

Is there by chance a threaded plug on the manifold some where? Put a vacuum gauge on it. Start unhooking the intake line from the filter and work towards the manifold to figure out where the bottlenecks are.

Different engine, but I was able to pick up 10hp from intake improvements. Replaced a couple corners with long sweep exhaust tubing etc. You really need to know what you are looking at to see it isn't stock.
