oliver 880 puller

Hello I found a good deal on a nice ( by the pictures anyway) oliver 880. I want to build my first puller. It there any year of the 880 I should stay away from ?? Its a gas 880 Iam going to go and take a look at.

I prefer the 1958 models because they have the spur gear rear end while the ones after 58' have the helical gears. Some guys like the helical and have had good luck with them, but I stick with the spur gear rear ends. My 2 cents!

(quoted from post at 17:27:24 09/19/11) Just check your rules some places won't allow the 880 because it's too new.

Thanks for the reply. There are some 880s running so I know I can at least compete with it. Iam just getting into pulling and really am partial to the old olivers. It seems as though there is alot of potential for these old 880s correct ?? I just want something I can stick with for awhile. Build it up as I go.

Who makes a good clutch for these 880s ?? And can I do much with the factory 265 or am I better off just swapping in a 310 from the start ??

Put 3 7/8 pistons in it, that will make a 283 cid motor. If they will let you do it put a 1600 head and big valves on it.

Couldn"t agree more with the spur gears over the helical cuts. If you start making any power, the helicals will give you nothing but trouble.
