OliverS88 still running a bit warm

I've flushed the cooling system 3 plus times now. I've used vinegar and then a Prestone radiator flush. Baled hay for about and hour and it got up to around 210 on the temp gauge. This is with straight water in the system and no thermostat since I haven't been able to find the correct thermostat for it. So will it run cooler with antifreeze in it??
 
casecollectorsc, you are right. On our race car engines (chevy) we used a disc with a 5/8" hole. In later years a special cross flow radiator is sold that has a baffle inserted in one end tank to make the water flow to one end and drop down and flow back to the other end. This slows it down and has the coolant in better contact with the cooling fins. Yes we raced Watertown, Huron. Aberdeen and other tracks.
 
My experience has been engines run slightly cooler with water, than antifreeze mix will. Antifreeze is good at ABSORBING heat, but is slower to RELEASE heat than water is. You can confirm by doing the tray test. Place two pans with 1 cup each of antifreeze and plain water. The water will evaporate faster than the antifreeze will. It's why I keep a bit of antifreeze next to the bench grinder to cool parts, it won't disappear as fast as water does.

There may be a little inaccuracy in the temperature gauge, is the radiator boiling over? In a non-pressurized system a 50-50 mix of water and antifreeze will not run much cooler but will raise the boiling temperature from 212F to 223 F.

While I am not sure if I had it over full the radiator did blow some of the water out and when I checked it after I shut it down there was no water over the top of the radiator

It will run cooler with a thermostat. The coolant/water does not stay in the radiator long enough to give off the heat, without the thermostat. Antifreeze won't make a difference. This site says they have a thermostat for an Oliver 88, if that helps. Mark.
 
Some guys like to preach about how to do stuff , then when it comes to their own stuff they are either too cheap or stubborn or both to do the job properly. It’s pretty obvious the rad needs a boil out. Thermostat or no thermostat that is not the problem. The rad cores are plugged as I said weeks ago. And also without a thermostat you will see the water rolling around circulating. And with plugged cores the water will be hardly moving. You should be able to draw your own conclusion just by looking in the rad with the engine running. If no circulation pull the rad.

Finding a thermostat isn't the problem really it is finding the parts that are needed to mount it in the holder Oliver Used.
 
I never thought it mattered if there was a thermostat in or not. If it would run hot without or with just the rad was not big enough. Our tractors all have thermostats but have had tractors with just water like after changing a water pup or something to run for awhile in summer to check for any leaks and used them for the summer and didn't get hot . I believe the problem is in the maker. IF the rad is big enough they7 will run cool and if not they will run warm to hot with or without a stat in them. All those old IH tractors would barely move the needle off the cold mark in summer and the Cat would run to the warm side anytime we worked it . Then again we plowed with the Cats and tillage while all the H did was plant since it was to small to pull the disc or the drag with it. ow days they think things should run at a set temperature and may be it is a bit more efficient on fuel with more temperature but sure leaves not much room for error if anything happens like a hose gets pulled off with a limb or blows out.

Have you had the lower hose off the radiator? If yes, does the water come out the bottom of the radiator as fast as you pour it in?

Have you had the water pump off? Wondering about the condition of the impeller.

In my experience, there's not a noticeable difference in actual running temps between water and antifreeze mix.
