Row Crop had posted a question on Oliver's Hydraulic Automatic Reset Plow on the 4th, thus I am going to answer his inquiry here.
Oliver introduced the Automatic Reset plow in the 1964/65 period, so it has been around a long time. This method of non-stop plowing revolutionized the plow manufacture's thinking and Oliver had it first.
The lines and the base ends of the cylinders are filled with hydraulic fluid as is the line leading to the bottom of the accumulater. The cylinder has a sliding piston to seperate the fluid from the dry Nitorgen that the upper end of the accumulator is charged with. Since dry nitrogen is a compressable gas, when a bottom of the plow meets a non movable object the bottom swings back and over the object forceing the rod and piston into the cylinder thus the nitrogen that has been compressed pushes the bottom back into the soil. This results in non-stop plowing.
I hope the plow that you purchased has been stored inside so that the cylinder rod are not rusted and don't leak. The accumulater was charged with dry Nitrogen to 1250 PSI from the factory. You need a tee fitting with a male and female couplers and a gauge that will read at least 4000 PSI. Plug in the male end of your tee into the plow system open the hand valve slowly and read the pressure that the system has. You should read pressure that is 10 to 15% above the 1250 that the accumulator has. Now hook a hose to the femaie coupler on your tee and the other end to you tractor coupling. Using your tractor drop the hydraulic pressure to 0 PSI. Now with the tractor running a low idle have someone move the hydrualic lever to pressurize the system. You are watching the gauge. The pressure should rise steadlly (rate depends on the output of your tractor system) and then stop momentarily. You are now beginning to compress the nitrogen. Allow the pressure to rise to the 10 to 15% figure above where it momentarily stopped increasing, now close the hand valve.
If the pressuer where the gauge stopped momentarily was too low you will have to have the accumulator charged, no big deal dealers have dry nitrogen to charge the combine header accumulators. If the pressure came up very rapidly and did not hesitate your accumulator does not have any nitrogen charge.
You didn't state which model your plow is. When you request the operators manual ask for form 437 061 as that manual has the best explaination of the Hydraulic Automatic Reset system.
