OMC 590 round baler

I"m looking at a OMC 590 baler, only bale about 10 acres of horse hay, bales to be stored inside. Researched everywhere I could reading reviews, sounds like this balers biggest down side is the soft core. Don"t really want to stick the money into a belt baler for what I"m doing and this one sounds easy to maintain and durable. Anyone have some info that might change my mind?

Don't want to change your mind It is a great baler You just need plenty of tractor to run it . I have a 595 as a backup. DO NOT USE CHEAP CHI COM CHAINS ON IT! It will shread it in about a hundred bales or so . Start slow and the feed aggressive She will eat as much as you can get through the pick up

Good to hear, just bought an MF 823, to roll some junk hay instead of square baling. Supposed to be the same as a Gehl 1310.

Previous owner ran it on a Farmall 350 which to my understanding has only 1/2 the hp needed make a full bale. Hopefully means its in good shape.

Nothing wrong with a soft core- especially when the hay isn"t totally dry- they breathe much better than a hard core. They may sag some if baled way to wet, and it dries. Check the dimples on the rolls- if they"re worn smooth they are not so aggressive in tough conditions, like corn stalks.

I have an OMC595. Makes huge 5.5 by 5.5 bales, but means less trips to storage and less trips to feed.
After I have filled the horse barns with squares, I fill the sheds with these soft core rounds. It is a simple machine. Bales are not as easy to move but the horses never seem to say much, and eat them just the same. It is a rare baler around here so I paid a lot less.

Hint: paint the 2 pickup drums with a paint/sand mix. It will eat hay faster. I have a 65HP tractor and bale in big big hills and it handles the baler alright.

I would buy it again in a minute, for what I am doing.

PS: It is the same as a Claas drum baler and they built 50,000 of them and still make them. Check it on Youtube.

I have had a 590 since they went into production. I fact my baler was actually a Claas that OMC brought here to test before they started making them here. My baler baled in probably a dozen states. I have rebuilt it several times at least 3 gearboxes, rewelded the axle on two times, don't know howmany sets of chains, and have no idea how many bales. It's a great baler. I have always had lots of power on it. I use a 1066 on it, I have used a smaller tractor but you can't put as much through it. It does like big windrows. Parts availability is getting a little tough. I'd buy another if I could find one real cheap.

Thanks for all the advice, confirms my feeling of not messing with expensive high maintenance belts for what I want it to do. Will be picking it up in a couple of weeks so I"ll be back on here with more questions I"m sure. Looking for a operators manual if anyone knows of a place to download one.

Got my 590 home last weekend, needed a few sprockets replaced, able to get them from Mcmaster for a lot less $$ than dealer. Got a Gehl 1310 Operators manual and found you can download the parts manual for one. Search it on google. Germanbliss website. Which led me my question, my 590 has a single twine tube on it, the Gehl 1310 manual shows 2. Is mine correct, couldn"t find signs of anything broke of or missing. other than a few worn sprockets, good shape. thanks for the help
