Onan generator question

I guess a generator is tool.....
Been working on an Onan 6.5 NH built in 1978. There are four leads out of the generator labled M1, M2, M3, and M4. Acording to the manual to wire for 120/240 outputs it says to tie M2 and M3 together and there should be two 120V outputs. (between M1 and M2/3 and between M2/3 and M4) and one 240V between M1 and M4. I know the generator is working because I get 120V between M1 and M2 and M3 and M4 but when I tie M2 and M3 together per manual the engine will not crank. It tries but it seems like there a load on it that the starter can not overcome.
Thanks in advance for any advise or sugestions.

Update...rewired it 240v only and seems to be working fine. Tied M1 and M4 together and I get 240V between M2 and M3. But would reallly be handy to have both 120 and 240. Will try something else when I get a new meter and the fingers on my left hand start working again. Don't ask...it's embarassing.....

Think this has been covered before. Some guys say they have two 120 outlets. The wall socket in your home is 120 on top and 120 on bottom. There is a special camper plug that when you stick it in you now have 240. The two 120 holes are from each side on the generator. The camper plug combines them. That is something Onan has cause it lets the generator be balanced or share the load or something.

A pair of 120V stator windings . Parallel them together for high current 120V. Or in additive series for 120 and 240V.
If paralleled wrong you have wired in a dead short.
