one wire alternator question

i have just about finished my 8n side mount dist. rewire project with one wire alternator, however one more question, i have my wire going from the alternator to the ammeter, what else needs to be done on the alternator to make sure it charges my battery?

thanks
dave

it looks like a wire goes from the stud on the back of the alternator to one side of the 2 prong plug then out of the other side of the 2 prong plug to the ammeter

is this correct?

thanks dave

Before my Dad passed i converted his 601
over to 12 volt and he wanted a gauge to
see if 1 wire alt was charging his
battery, so i made bracket from aluminum
and bolted on the side so that we didn't
have to cut a hole in the dash, works
great, one wire from alt, then wire to
pos terminal on battery, can still
picture Dad watching that gauge when he
cranked tractor before he would mount up

not specifically.

that is a 3 wire setup.

your 1 wire needs a wire from the charge stud.

you can always check to see if your 1 wire will function as a 3 wire if you want to. some will, and thus will excite at lower rpm.

at this point my one wire is attached to the ammeter, and ammeter reads 0 while running, other terminal of ammeter goes to solenoid and meets the positive battery cable

must still have something wrong, even with increased rpms the ammeter doesn't move

Are you sure you have a one-wire alternator instead of a standard alternator? All a one-wire needs is the wire from the charge stud through the ammeter to the battery. A standard alternator requires more.

That is a 3 wire set up. The wire with the diode goes to the ignition switch the side that is hot when turned on. The wire from the charge stud goes to the amp meter and when running it should charge but if the wire with the diode is not hooked up it will NEVER charge since it does not get the current to excite the alternator and make it charge

No, on a three wire. One large wire from the stud to the
amp meter. The two prong plug. One wire to the large stud
on the alternator. The second wire with a inline diode
goes to the coil side of the key switch.

Personal preference, really. There are multiple places you can put the ammeter - each will show you useful info.

I wired up my 12v system similar to this drawing. I don't have the fuel gauge (or dash light) but instead a voltmeter that just runs to ground instead of the sending unit shown. This is a one-wire alt. 12v; and allows the headlights, tail light and a swivel work-light (very handy) to be used without the tractor running.

When I first got my 640 it had been rewired multiple times. I was having all kinds of electrical gremlins; including the battery boiling away with the ignition off! Finally I just yanked ALL the wiring and started over. I ended up with at least 10 feet of unnecessary oddball "jumpers" and dead-ended wires left over even after re-using most of the wires that were in good shape.
