open pollinated seed corn

does anybody still plant open pollinated corn? i'm try to decide what to plant about an acre to. i live in central OH and was wondering if any one had suggestions for varieties. i'm looking at the greenfield and reid varieties from heirloomacresseeds.com thanks

If ear color isn't a concern, I've had excellent results with Wapsie Valley, especially in drought conditions.

Planted 4 acres one year as an experiment.Old timers used to say livestock preferred it to hybrid corn.Best test weight I ever raised.Ordered 1 bushel of seed. Could hardly lift it.--- Didn't stand well and yielded quite a bit less than hybrid planted next to it.Every size, color and shape of ears imaginable.Supposed to be Reid's Yellow Dent.
FWIW: Some are now saying the newer GMO stacked hybrids are causing cattle to not breed very well. Some problem getting them to settle.Just read about it today.

I hate GM crops. Who knows what they are going to do to us. GM corn makes its own poison that kills bugs and corn smut. What is corn syrup doing to you? I guess Americans like being guinea pigs.

I've grown it,grows tall, wont stand, and wont drydown.I wont plant anymore.plain hybrid(nongmo) suits me better.Theres an outfit inNY that sells the OP corn

All of the GMO bits are in the protiens of the plant.

Corn syrup comes from the sugars.

So while safety questions are cool, there likely isn't much to worry about your specific setup because the gmo isn't in the sugary parts?

There are several versions of GMO, some only have weed control, some have insect control in the stalk or root only, newere ones have stacked insect control in several areas.

Again, not saying you shouldn't question it, just saying there are different types of GMO, not so good to make a blanket statement of 'all' gmo corn being this or that....

I planted a 1/4 acre of "Bloody Butcher" last year on a whim. The stalks were 12' tall plus. It yielded reasonably well. Been feeding it to my wife's chickens, they seem to like the red color.

I will probably plant it again.
