Operation 8N: It's... ALIVE!!!

We have ignition! I indeed had a ground in the distributor, created when I "improved" on things and added a lock washer under one of the points screws - the added height was enough to cause the screw head to touch the spring on the points, grounding the whole thing out.

After removing the offending washer and reassembling everything, I tried cranking again, but still no fire. I checked all four plug wires at the plug and was getting a good strong spark, so I tried it again with some ether for good measure and still no fire. Then I remembered to turn on the gas, and it popped! Tried it again, and it started right up - woohoo!

My 8N moved under its own power tonight for the first time in nearly four years, and after three fairly solid months of work (not counting the initial teardown three+ years ago).

I have several items that will need attention before I go do any work: two of the oil lines were leaking profusely, so those will need redone, and I could hear the fan hitting the shroud, so more adjustment is needed there. I also need to grease all the fittings and top off the hydraulic oil, plus retorque the head bolts after a half hour of running, etc., etc., etc.

Video is forthcoming, but YooToob isn't cooperating with me at the moment - will try again tomorrow.

Finally, I have to thank the Lord for provision, strength, safety and perseverance, and MANY MANY THANKS to everyone here who has offered advice, correction or just plain old encouragement.

Huston, we have ignition. I knew it'd fire up sooner than later. How is the oil pressure and did the 90 wt. prime do the trick? David.....

Glad to here that. My @ 5 yr makeover was a great relief when it moved on it's own 4 paws and power. Relish the feeling! Still waiting on the machinist to get my 6 month 841 project moving. It's only engine work, no paint.

Dayum, can't you just feel that feeling!!!!

You GO Ed!!!

Nice Job Ed! Can't wait to see your video. Thanks again for all of your pics throughout the project. I know your adventure will inspire others here on the forum. I have a little work to do on my '50 8N, but right now, it's still in service, so I ain't complainin'!

GA Dave,

I never got around to repriming with 90w, but I had 40+ lbs within two seconds of it firing up... was keeping a close watch on it and would have shut down if no pressure had come up within 15-20 seconds or so.

I'm also showing 30amps charge, which may be because I had been cranking on it so much (without recharging). Will have to check that out, too.

But what A GREAT FEELING to hear it run again!
