Operation 8N: Sorting Out the Bugs

Been taking a little bit of a breather since getting the 8N going, but did spend a little time on it last night. I got the oil line leak slowed down to a drip-drip from the gusher that it was, but suspect I munged the flaring job and will have to redo that line (from oil block on right rear to oil filter on left front).

Also bent and tapped on the fan shroud and got the "interference fit" almost corrected - at idle it doesn't hit, but under load it does. More bending and tapping is in order, I think.

My ammeter is still showing a pegged-out +30 amp charge (I did check to make sure wires are hooked up to the right terminals - when you turn the lights on, you get a discharge). While running, I turned all the lights on, and after 15 seconds or so, they all went out and won't come back on. Did not troubleshoot either of those problems yet, but suspect blown fuses are possibly related to the ammeter indication.

Other than that, she's running pretty smooth - a little hint of a miss at high RPM, but I have not yet adjusted the carb (just left it where it was when I took it apart). She's got a nice sound, especially after being used to my loaner 8N which had a blown out exhaust gasket.

Lift worked fine, a little slow and jerky coming up (no load).

Drove 'er around in 1, 2 and 3 gears, goosing the throttle, and did fine.

Oh, while driving into Princeville, IL yesterday, the fellow that has the freshly redone 601 for sale also had a fresh 9N sitting next to it. Didn't catch the price on that one, but would be happy to check or grab photos if anyone is interested.

All for now - have a great Independence Day weekend!

Glad to hear things are going well!

Fan shroud adjustments are a PITA. It all has to do w/ the bumpers under the radiator as well as the "adjustment" of the radiator by moving the top hose. I learned long ago to check for shroud clearance w/ the hood off. But, I also learned that you can fix it as you're doing; it just takes longer.

Yea, you probably popped a fuse in the lights. But, I'd be concerned about that current draw. First, charge the battery to make sure that is ok. Then, tap on the v/r in case it's stuck. Don't let it draw that much current for too long or you will boil the battery. Get out the meter & find out what's going on.

The jerky lift is probably just air in the pump; keep working it.

Post some more pics!

ED;
You're on the downhill side, with great results. The only thing that I can add to what Bruce said is; Make sure the V/R has a really good paint-free ground under it. I use an 8N genny and v/r on my 2N, and when I first started mine up, after painting, my amp guage was doing much like yours.
SouNdguy, set me straight on the ground for the v/r, and that fixed my prob. with it. That and I hope you polarized it before starting.
Just a thought!!!!

Have an "N" day!!!!

For the oil line, WHY don't you just get a pre-made steel brake line, and re-route it slightly to use up any extra length.

Or, are you set up to make "double flares"?

I may give that a try - I have one more "blank" steel brake line (bought an extra, just in case). I do have a flaring tool, but it's a cheapie, and the initial flare doesn't work too good.

Make sure the V/R has a really good paint-free ground under it.

That makes a lot of sense, and I don't think I ground the paint off under the VR. Will try that and report back.

Fan shroud adjustments are a PITA.

I can only agree! I did try to adjust everything before the hood went on, but my tractor has been whanged about a lot in its former life, and we had to readjust the radiator to get it lined up with the hole in the hood. Even with new rubber mount pads, it still sits a little too low (had to "relocate" the hood sheet metal around the opening lower just to be able to put the cap on). If I raised the radiator any higher, the bottom of the shroud would definitely interfere. BTW, the radiator is a "land of almost right" replacement model that came with the tractor.

I'll just have to keep poking and prodding at it until I find the right combination.
