OT 01 Chevy trans

01 Chevy 1500 with 4.3 & auto trans. Trans is fine when cold but starts slipping after driving just short distance. Can hear a slight noise when sitting in park or neutral, sound like a pwr steering pump when low on fluid, noise goes away if put into any gear. Strange thing is that after warms up it won"t go into reverse unless I shut the engine off and wait eight or ten seconds then restart and goes right in with no slippage. "Service Engine Light" came on when this started, per my daughter who borrowed truck from grandma so now I get to fix LOL. Noticed trans pan has a plug in the left front corner but assume not a drain plug since it is recessed. Truck has 102k on it. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Mike

Sounds like the friction discs may be shot and you may have lost a gear set or bushing. Is the transmission fluid on the dipstick some shade of brown, and or, smell burnt? If it is, you need a rebuild job. The plug in the pan should be a drain plug. I used to rebuild transmissions years ago. I guess the newer ones have some electronics in them, which may be acting up on you, but from your description, I doubt it. You could drain the fluid and see what it looks like, or pull the pan and see what is in it. Hope this helps.

try resseting the computer.all these things are controlled from that.sounds to me as if yours is going into limp in mode.resetting it may solve it.probably time for a rebuild though.
