OT:6.5 Chevy diesel

I have a 2000 pickup that has started idling at 1200 rpm's instead of 700. It has 140,000+ miles on it. After it warms up to operating temp it slows to normal rpm's. Is pump controlled by computor? Does pump have a govenor in it like older pumps? Thanks,Jim

The 'puter controls EVERYTHING... fuel rate, advance, idle speed, and max speed.

You need to get a scan tool on it, and take a look at what the 'puter is seeing for coolant and intake air temperatures. It sounds like it "has the shivers", 'cause it's being told the air or the coolant is colder than it really is.

Obviously, check for trouble codes, as well.

Its probably just the computer speeding the idle up to help the engine warm up faster in the cold weather. My diesel pickup does the same thing. If its not that cold where you are, then its probably a bad sensor like Bob said.

Thanks for replies and I forgot to say I had it scanned by a local mechanic. No fault codes showed up,only thing funny was as engine speed increasd scan tool showed rpm's falling. Thanks,Tx Jim
