OT:Brush guard/deer

Driving to the lake last night I had a big doe come out the cattails in the ditch at full speed no time to lock up the brakes. Nailed her dead center of the front of the truck. I've got a luverne grill guard on it. And I am pretty impressed it saved a ton of damage. Scared the chit out of my daughter who was sleeping. Her head dented the drivers fender. Pushed the guard in almost to the front of the truck and tweaked my bumper. Small dent on the front of the hood that appears creased and busted the bug deflector. Sheriff said they have 40-50 deer accidents in the section of road per year. Yet they don't take any care to mowing the ditches. Do insurance companies cover brush guards being they're aftermarket Accessories. I do have full coverage in it. I've never read the declarations.

does your insurance co cover deer damage? I have to deal with darned ins companys on a daily basis. Some claim the deer are too thick in Iowa and are not covering damage or are covering it on a reduced basis.

They do yes. The comprehensive side of it covers it. I hit it in the zone we hunt in. Last year was lottey and this year they have made it hunters choice. The wolves have really put a dent in the deer population. Paired with nasty winters.

Rifle season we get a 9day season. Bow runs
sept to Dec. Muzzy I'm not sure on anymore.
We had a mild winter this last year so that
helped the deer. Seen lots of does with
twins this year.

Yes yer guard should be covered.
I know what you are saying about the deer. To add to the problem around here is the amount of logging that is going on. The woods around my land are disappearing as mine becomes infested with the buggars.

I hear ya. Thanks for answering my ?
They've done quite a bit of logging around
us also. That's not so bad but the mess
they leave behind is ridiculous.

We have similar accidents around here, especially on I89 and I90. Moose are the ones you have to watch out for. Usually the car is totaled and the driver or passengers can get killed.

With full coverage yes they should. I only have liability on my cars but do have uninsured deer coverage. Hope you did not just let the deer lay there but instead picked it up and butchered it. Of course what you need is the grill guards I make and you would not have to get any thing fixed other then maybe your shorts cleaned out. LOL

That's one thing we are seeing a major decline in here is Moose. Imagine that the DNR doesn't know why.

With the temps so hot and 100 miles from home we didn't take the deer. I don't think there would have been much salvageable meat on her anyhow. Hit her whole left side and she skidded across the road down the ditch on her right. This guard was the 1/1/2" might see if we can pay the difference and put a 2" on it.

Last grill guard I built came in at around 300lbs and would stop any deer and not hurt it other then maybe break off a light. As for saving the deer a few bags of ice would fix the temp problem. But I do hate to see any thing go to waste be it deer or be it ground hog

We probably would have but was going the opposite direction of home. Sounds like a pretty heavy guard. It took an hr for the cop to show up.

Ya the grill guard I built was made of 2 or 3 inch 1/4 inch thick tubing. I built it because a deer shut down my 1969 Chev pick up by putting a hole in the radiator big enough to put my hand threw. Once I got he truck fixed I said never again and it never did happen again. As for the deer I would have kept it no matter what because if nothing else it would have made dog food and saved me $$

'm not positive about this ,but I heard in Iowa you had to call a cop and pay for a roadkill deer you hit.It may have been wisconsin or Illinois though.

No charge for hitting a deer in Iowa that I know of. Just call the police for an injury or to file a report for the insurance company. You can keep the deer if you hit it or else they just let it lay along the roadway. I had to dispose of a doe that had been killed and left laying on the shoulder of our road a day earlier. It was only about 100 yards from the house. I drug back into our timber for the coyotes to feed on.

Here in Missouri you have to call conservation and let them know and they then send you a tag so you can keep it. But of course by the time the tag gets to you, you have it frozen

"Scared the chit out of my daughter who was sleeping. Her head dented the drivers fender."
Hope your Daughter is OK. That must had giving a heck of a headache. LOL.
Sorry for the Funny. But that's the way it reads.
Glade you are both OK.

Lol....good catch! Sometimes I get rambling and ya know how that goes. Highlight of my evening was...my mother in law followed us home...well kinda. Now she drives 54.5mph doesn't want a speeding ticket. So we drove 56...anyhow she was a mile or so behind us all the way till about 30 miles from her farm. We lost her at a town. She turned north instead of South and ended up way further from home before she called and asked where we were. We were sitting in her yard waiting for her. Man was she pizzed. Great fishing though! She finally made it home an over an hr later after calling 2 more times to see what way to go. :)

In Mn I believe you have to wait for the
DNR to come give you a tag. We waited an hr
for the cop who lives 10 miles away I don't
imagine the DNR is any faster. I wish it
was like Main where they take the deer to
food pantry or homeless shelters.

In WI you used to have to call the sheriff, police or DNR. They would eventually show up and issue you a tag. I was just reading that now you can call the DNR directly. During business hours they talk to you and take your information. After hours, you leave a message with your information. Not sure when this change happened.

Good call. I've hit a couple, took them in cooler weather, the side that is hit is completely blood shot. You'll get a little meat, but not usually worth it.

I know the bumper can be just bent back up in place cause I tagged a mule deer in Silverton, Colorado a couple years ago with my 06, and that's how much it bent it. Dave
