MILs car Crown Vic 94 with 80K miles: On highway at 70 she says car cuts off and goes down to 40, revs up, trans jerks, smooths out but only runs 40mph. Auto zone does readout states MPL sensor voltage low. I think MPL is gearshift selection module. Tech. didn't know. Talked to Ford man, he says more likely vehicle speed sensor. Any and all ideas appreciated because I gotta deal with it or loan her my car. Wish somebody had a rap sheet on this vehicle. 4.6 engine. Auto trans. Thanks a million.

The MLP is the neautral switch (Manual Lever Position Switch). IF you have a code from auto zone that is the direction to go. Both MLP's and speed sensors fail so trust the computer codes outputted.

Dave, sounds like a typical mlp type problem, pretty common for that type of vehicle. Your best bet is to have someone hook up a scanner to it, road test it and when the problem happens run a movie and then go back and read the data to see exactly what the computer was seeing. If you don't have access to a scanner or a friend with a scanner, then I would probably change the mlp being that code came up, good luck.

The 94's had trouble with the MLPS, replace it - the new one will have a different/better type of seal to keep water and dirt out of it.

Sounds more like a fuel delivery problem to me, fuel filter or pump most likely. You can have mlp codes and have no symptoms of a malfunction.
