OT/deer hunters

I've always read topics like this and thought "I'm glad I don't have that problem". Well yesterday was my turn. I live along the lakeshore in Wisconsin. I was at my property Sunday around dusk. As I was closing up shop I heard a shot fired. Didn't think much of it as neighbors sometimes shoot varmints. As I'm leaving I see headlights along the road toward the intersection so I go to see what's up. Here 3 guys are dragging a deer out of my family's property. I asked who the permission came from (we never give any) and one guy says Hxxxx Hxxxxx (local dairy farmer who rents the land for crops). I said bullsh@% and he starts hollering about how I don't know what I'm talking about. Another guy tells me it's illegal to "harrass hunters" and I countered that it's my right to protect my property.

Now these guys are getting fired up and my daughter is in the truck so I decide it's best to leave. Unfortunately I didn't get tag or plate numbers (I should have done that when I pulled up but didn't expect to find what I did). I did call DNR when I got home with a description of the vehicles. Warden told me they likely had a muzzle loader, shot the deer right at dusk and probably only were trespassing at worst. I believe the dirtbag POS's shot first from the vehicle at dark with houses in each direction AND I had driven thru there potential line of fire not 10 minutes before on my snowmobile. The way it looked they pulled over and attacked the deer.

Tomorrow the signs go up. I'll be sure to carry my cell phone and will be calling the Sheriff FIRST and asking questions later. WTF do people think?

Thanks for the rant time, but I still fell violated!

what did the dairy farmer say when you asked him if he gave permission for someone to hunt there?

If these guys knew his name then they must have talked to him.

Make sure your tenant did not give permission for them to hunt.

If he did, tell him you don't want hunters on your property.

Some leases allow for the tenant to allow or disallow hunting.

I don't know if you have a written lease and if hunting rights are covered in the lease.

I know were I stand with hunting rights with all my landlords.

Some its up to me, some no one hunts and some its just me thats allowed to hunt.

Here in PA if the land isn't posted, hunters are allowed in (of course they're required to respect safety zones around buildings and not hunt from their vehicles).

Property that isn't posted around here would be rare. I just heard about a guy shooting a cow, thinking it was a coyote!! I have had fences cut, stands built into my trees, trash strewn all over, items stolen, my yard hydrant turned on and left on. That really got me. I can't begrudge a man a drink of water, but why leave it on? I have had a couple of conversations with hunters that talked about their "rights". I told them their "rights" didn't include tresspassing on my ( posted ) property.

They had a name and used it, I"ve encountered hunters who have told me my name as the guy who gave permission and I never seen them before.

I called him right after I talked to the warden. IMHO he would not and assured me he does not give permission to anyone to hunt on land he rents. My calling him was dual purpose - I also have a feeling at least one of these guys works or worked for Hxxx and is son and probably figures he can hunt anywhere he has worked a field, at least he has a name to drop that makes him sound credible. Maybe the word will get out on that end.

Thanks,

10+ years ago my ex and I had some homestead property we bought from her grandma. One day 3 guys come walking thru with guns for rabbits 25 feet from my house. I asked who they had permission from. They told me my ex's grandpa's name. He died in 1977! I told them their permission expired in 1977 and get the f#$% off my property! Had they called or stopped BEFORE suiting up with guns I probably would have thought it was neat to meet granpa's old buddies.

I'm a farmer/landowner and a hunter; I've had trouble with tresspassing before, and damage to locked gates. In dealing with those problems, I found out that, in Wisconsin, PRIVATE property DOES NOT have to be posted, or even fenced; Anyone must have permission to go on your property. Also, calling the game warden about tresspassing does no good. You need to call your sherriff for that. I will let most people who take the time to ask hunt my land, but for the gun deer season, only for part of the season, as I have enough guys in my crew that we pretty much cover my farm for the first several days.

I farm on the south edge of 16,000 acres of public hunting so I have heard every excuse there is to here.

One day dad and I asked for their hunting license and took down all the information.

Told them they would be hearing from the sheriff.

Later that day one showed up at the farm and begged not to turn them in.

He had borrowed the license from a friend.

Here in Pa you aren't allowed on unposted ground without WRITTEN PERMISSION. Problem is that you can't patrol the ground 24/7. I am not real fond of walking up to guys carrying guns. It makes me uneasy.

I hear that. Somebody wants to hunt on my place,I tell them they'd better not leave empty handed.

For some reason it seems like when you give certain people a gun their IQ drops about 50 points. Those stories about hunters talking about "their rights" cracks me up. As far as I'm concerned someone hunting on my land without permission expressly from ME has NO rights. Not that I'm an @$$hole and don't share a little but the attitude you hear from some is ridiculous. Ask them how they'd feel if you just walked in their house and started going through their belongings and raiding their refrigerator!

I had one quite familiar to that. I caught an outlaw neighbor/farmer on my land several years ago. He said he had permission from my greatgrandfathers to hunt.

I told him my greatgrandfather died 40 yrs previous and if he wanted permission to hunt that day he would need a current notorized permission slip from him.

I later asked my grandfather about it and he said my dad would have never given permission to that sob.

Don't even get me started on people who think they have hunting rights to places they don't!
I heard a shot this passed rifle season as I was getting into my truck. I could see the guy standing on the road and the deer he had just shot at run about 50' behind my house. I got in the truck and drove out to check him out. He wasn't pleased when I took a photo of him and his tuck. Got word later that he had been nabbed doing the same thing about 3 -4 miles from here. His wallet is gonna be a WEE bit lighter.....
