OT Finish Mower

I have a Befco finish mower that i use behind my 1950 8N. I try to take good care of it by cleaning it after every use and greasing it regularly. One item that i have never serviced is the gearbox as i am hesitant to remove the top of it without having knowledge of how the gears are configured within. Is it as simple as unbolting the cover and lifting it off? If I can take the cover off, what type of grease oil should i use to lubricate the gears? I do not have a service manual, but knowing how this board has helped me in the past with my 8N, figured someone might be familiar with this type of mower. Thanks

I guess it is equivalent to a differntial on a car or truck then. I will have to check on the drainplug...can't remember seeing one.

It should have a vent plug/fill plug. No need to disassemble. Just a right-angle gear combo. I use same stuff in my Woods RD7200 as I use in my 8N tranny. Nice ROPS. Did you have it installed? If so, where did you get and and how much did it cost?

The ROPS is from Saf-T-Cab (google it for their website). I bolted it on myself. Cost about $700 (including shipping) in 2003 if i remember correctly. My wife insisted I get the ROPS otherwise she would not let me buy the tractor!

Thanks for the link! Looks like they changed gear box systems for all their equipment at some point. My mower is probably twenty years old or more.

Thanks Jerry. My wife is wise...Shortly after installing my ROPS a friend of ours was killed when his JD (pulling a loaded wagon)jack-knifed going down a steep hill and the tractor rolled on top of him. I think about that accident every time i hop on my machine and put the seatbelt on.
