OT Garden Reports

Got some fresh vegetables today. This is #2 and 3 for the tomatoes. Took them a while. I have a bunch of green ones. Lost count on cucumbers. They done good this year..

Most all of my stuff has done its do, and came and went, it was good.

Okra is still kickin butt, watermelons were just picked, quite a few, but small compared to last year.

So far we have put up a gallon jar of Hobo's famous recipe, pickled okra, added some small green tomatoes to it too. Ill try to get a pic of it.

Mine's about played out. Maters & okra are all thats left. Tore down the last of the beans yesterday. We had a row of half runners & a row of Greasy Cut Shorts. The Greasy's must have crossed with the HR's cause they wasn't what they was supposed to be. Live & learn. Next year I'll plant em in a different area.
Cukes barely made after 3 plantings & I don't think we got a handful of squash. Boring worms or something.
Been eatin some mighty fine maters though.

Water melons died sometime ago had 2 tiny ones...They never paned out.

Pumpkin died never had a pumpkin...I think the maters and cukes will live on they are healthy...Average 1st frost is november 1st.

Cantalope is a live and flowering. one walnut sized melon :lol: Deer got into it when it was young but it is still kicking.

I forgot to mention my corn. We mighta got 5 or 6 dozen ears between the squirrels, coons & turkeys & then a bear came in & wiped it all out. Anything that looked like it might make a kernel he ate. Then he left a big token/pile of his appreciation at the end of the garden.

Tomatoes are played out. Okra is ok; peppers & eggplant are doing fine. Late snaps. black eyed peas are coming in. Salad is up about an inch (mustard, turnip greens & kale)

We went from mid-May to the end of Aug w/ 3.5 inches of rain. Since then, we've got 8.5 inches!

Its been so wet here trees are fall'n cuzz they can not stand in mud in a lite breeze,,, I have lost 10 trees in the last 6 weeks,,, close to 20" of rain has fall'n over that time,,, i hurt my back in the spring and could not tend to the garden,,, had to plow some of it up, grass took it over,,, hale got me 3 times, or it was to wet and cold,,, corn did rite well after the second planting,,,,I got my first mater Aug 1st form then on till last week its rained maters I think,,,, "bout as good as they have ever been,,, so many i put up a mater for sale sign,,, sold rite many,, had fun talk'n to the victims I mean customers,,, I spec i had to throw away several hundred maters,,, Wife is werk'n 4 jobs,,, mom had a knee replacement,,, I been buzy in the shop so we did not git to juice as many maters as i would like,,,it was so wet they just busted open over nite,,, round here one plant'n will last till frost on the maters if you cage'em up so thay don't lay on the ground,,, I was gonna plant some late maters but could not git the suckers to root, gave it my best shot,,,, Have yet to plant my salad patch are late peas,,, its tilled and ready but to wet,,, worst case I can pic what i want at the grocery store,,, I did git the lady across the road from me collard patch ready to plant,,, she has 300 are so set out and said she was gonna plant me some salad,,,if it don't git my own planted then I will not git to gut shoot a haft a dozen deer that think what i plant is fer them to eat,,, I never was one to kill any thang but i got over look'n at'em and don't need a herd of deer that are pets and eat what i plant for me to eat,,, must B work'n cuzz they shy away from here now less I plant peas,,, all this has got me thirsty,,, git me one when you git up :lol:

You guys with your gardens. I've followed these garden reports and am envious. Don't have one myself. Been living here for less than a year and all my effort/$ has been adding on to the house. Got the deal made on the third lot here but don't own it yet. When I get it it'll be enough room to hook up the Ferguson 1-16.
Almost.
I live in the city.
I want to start a start a patch of Kohlrabies and Rutabagas.
Sell them to the yuppies at the Co op.
My neighbors have me well supplied with tomatoes, green beens and cukes.
I kind of see it as a guy with a small Ford and a plow owes it to the land to do some gardening.
It would be good to use the draft control again.

FROST!!!

Last night was our first frost. The weatherman said a low of 38, but I know that means 29 in northern Minnesota.

All the sheet in the house were on the tomatoes, I transfered the row covers from the cabbage to the beans, and let the zuchinni fend for themselves.

I Spent most of Monday afternoon putting the sides on the high tunnel. I"m still working on getting the heater running, I think the orface needs to be cleaned.

We"ve been getting 60 # of beans a week, 5 # of Cherry tomatoes, 4-8 tomatoes a day. The cucumbers have slowed down considerably. And Ive been selling out every weed for the last month.

Has anyone ever pulled a lister behind their N, Could you modify a Dearborn Cultivator to use a lister on it?
My next question is has anyone built or used a row shaper behind their N.?

Old Katie is in the shop reciving an overhaul on the engine, so she"ll be ready in the fall for plowing.

Somedays I wish I was down south when it comes to gardening.

I don't have that much that i tend,,, I do more for the neighbors than i do for my self,,, I have 3 spots one 'bout 40X80 one 40X125 and one 30X80,,, but it takes 5 tractors to do it all :roll: I do feed the whole clan out of it when thangs are going good,,, 'bout all I can tend,,, irrigated and still hold a job,,, I hope one day to till more and have enuff to sell ,,, go broke and have some fun,,, I have 20 acers all I paid dearly for cept about 3 of it,,, the spots that i garden now at one time were not mind,,, money could not buy the land at enny price,,, the old folks that owned it gave it to me,,, their daddy farmed it and cuzz i farmed it they wanted me to have it,,, they all have a nice N supplied by me no strings its theirs wif a lifetime warranty,,, Folks in their 80's shore nuff remember going from a mule to a tractor of enny kind, least country folks do,, stay at it theirs lite at the end of the tunnel,,, long as your next VP is a gal from Alaska

Our green beans put out great this year, as did the tomatoes, squash, & peppers. The beans are played out, but everything else is still going.

The tomatoes have definitly slowed down, & several plants just stopped producing fruit. They were the sweetest tomatoes I can remember out of this garden....I guess all that dried molasses is paying off.

Any ideas on how to extend the life of a tomato plant? I sure would like to keep these going.

Well, the new apple trees we planted have produced about 3 apples slightly larger than a golf ball, and they sure were good. I have high hopes for them next year. The pears produced well, but I didn't get as many good ones as in years past. Cherry usually gets eaten by the birds before I get a chance to pick, but they're really tart with pits so they can have them for all I care. I'm fairly certain the peach tree has stopped producing, a combination of lack of sunlight and pollination issues, if I had to guess. There are absolutely no pecans on the trees. I guess that's okay, after 2 years of absolutely incredible production they get a break (its supposed to be alternating years). Too bad the bugs get all the nuts.

Worse year I have ever had. Mato didn't do well and most stuff died before it got going well. All I can figure was it was to wet in the spring then got to dry later. Only thing that is sort of doing well is my Okra but with only 4 plants that's not enough to do much

Despite being a crummy year, we've done okay. Dill pickles are put up, sweet dills will be canned tonight, sweet corn and green beans are frozen, and strawberries and 1 gallon of blueberries are frozen! The blueberries are particularly exciting as these are 20 year old plants left for dead that my wife and I have painstakingly coaxed back to life over the past 5 years.

This past weekend we harvested watermelon, cantaloupe, eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and lots of herbs.

Raspberries and okra have failed this year. Verdict is still out on the sweet potatoes.

We had our first frost in Central Minnesota on Sunday night, and another on Monday. The coming week looks good, though.

Our garden was a miserable failure. Deer ate tthe tops off most of the corn and all the sunflowers when they were still 6" tall. What corn remained produced soft, chewy, flavorless ears of corn about 6 inches long. The deer and coons are sure eating them, though.

The pumpkins spread like a man-eating mutant in a sci-fi movie, but didn't produce any actual pumpkins. Peas drowned in heavy rains, and the few greenbeans I planted died from neglect, since I kinda lost interest with the condition of everything else.

One small bed of strawberry plants just seemed to whither and die - the runners from last year never took off.

We woulda had a bumper crop of wild blackberries , but we didn't get a drop of rain all through august, so they were small, hard and sour.

Being a glutton for punishment, I'm gonna try again next year. I'm going to give up on the corn. I might do maters and peppers for salsa. I've grown peppers before, and they're about the only plants that do well here, in my soil.

It was fun, trying, though.
