OT Hand Cranks

Can anybody help ID these two Engine Cranks? I got them in a lot that included one for a 8N.

I won't swear to anything about those but I don't beleive that the top one is for an H unless the one we had was not for an H. It worked very well though. It had the head very similar to the AC one but the anges of the handle were 90*.

Hand crank made for a Farmall A/B/C or the hand crank for a B/C Allis will work also one for the MM RTU and a few others will also work on the N series fords. Used all 3 more then once on some of the old Ns I have had

I have a cranck for IHC H that I think is original. It is made very much like the bottom crank except all the angles are 90 degrees. The end looks the same. Hope this helps.
Thank You

While on the subject of cranks.
What is the proper hand crank technique?
What is the consequence of not adhering to the proper hand crank technique?

It's real important to not wrap your thumb around the handle because when the engine kicks back, the crank will try to take your thumb off.

You only have to do that once and it will stick with you for a lifetime.

I can personally answer this, first i'll start with the consequenses..
(1) CAN KILL YOU! the man who made mack trucks was killed by a hand crank
(2) can break your arm
(3) can break your thumb which hurts worse than breaking your arm
(4) can do any thing in between killing you and scraping your knuckles
now for the proper procedure,,
(1)turn on ignition if equipped
(2)pull choke
(3)set throttle
(4)set spark advance- if equipped
(5)insert crank
(6)put hand on crank without wrapping thumb around handle.just put handle in palm of hand with thumb along side
(7)PULL UP!sharply, one pull, never ever under any circumstance push crank!!!those folks you see on tv or videos who grab crank and keep turning ARE FOOLS!!!and they are asking to be killed or seriously hurt!
(8)if tractor doesnt fire reset crank and try again ,always pulling up.the reason for this is simple.if it does backfire it will pull crank out of your hand instead of firing against your hand.

correction ,#1 on the starting procedure.make SURE tractor is out of gear!!..hundreds have been killed when one started in gear.Remember ,if one is working correctly all tractor has to do is turn over top dead center one time on any cyl and it will be started and running. Its amazing how easy one starts thats tuned up right ,with proper compression.

(1)turn on ignition if equipped
(2)pull choke
(3)set throttle
(4)set spark advance- if equipped
(5)insert crank
Then go find younger dumber brother/cousin/wife to turn it for you.

Please explain how it will try to take your thumb off. When you are pulling against compression, the handle is against the inside of your 4 fingers. If kickback happens it will be against your 4 fingers, not your thumb.I have been hand cranking all my life & never got hurt. If timing is too early, you can feel it when you turn them slow. Get the timing right & crank slow. Kickback comes from trying to spin them too fast & the impulse doesn't catch to retard the spark.

Just cause it never happened to you don't mean it can't happen! Be safe, be smart, use the electric starter if so equipped!!!!!! I've hand cranked tractors in bitter cold....it's a way over rated experience! I remember a young officer at Baumholder Germany who ordered a new Harley with the optional kick start that had to be rescued from under his bike about once a week cause he just had to try to kick start it!

Wrap your thump around it and have it kick back.....where's my thumb???? Can and has happened, just not every time!

wont if your pulling thats the point of pulling!its anytime that you quit pulling and start pushing you get hurt.I saw a international cub literally pick a guy up that weighed 150lbs and throw him 20ft across a barn.No lie,it collapsed his arm to about half its original length!!and it never worked right again.pull up once over that way if it does kick back your clear.it will simply pull the crank out of your hand.

how many have you cranked? what if you dont have a impulse?impulse speeds up mag turning to increase spark while cranking.lots of tractors dont have it, N type tractors for instance that have battery ignition.ive started them with a straight rod with a bolt through the end ,and a pipe wrench for a handle.they arent hard to start any time if their tuned right.backfiring,or kickback can happen for lots of reasons, getting one wet, cracked cap, timing off etc etc etc.always crank one the right way and it wont hurt you, dont and its like playing with a loaded gun.the one that broke my arm was a allis "B" id cranked it for years because it was hand crank only.I overhauled it and was setting the timing on mag.rolled it over to tdc on #1 and reached up with other hand and pushed mag in the opposite direction of rotation so i could pull it out until impulse let loose which would put it in time. When i did it back fired and my right hand was laying on crank, end of story.

I just realized I didnt answer your question.Heres how it breaks your thumb,Have you ever have the crank not come out when it fires?do this, feel of the angled part of your crank system, the part that is supposed to release crank when it fires, some have it on the crank itself, some on front of engine, some like a wd or wc could have it on both.Feel of it carefully, chances are you will find a notch wearing in it,dont believe it ?just check. You may be surprised. When that notch gets deep enough crank WILL hang, when it does and you have thumb over top of crank what do you think happens?Engine doesnt have to kick back,it CAN seriously hurt or kill you just starting normally!!!!.At very least it will either break your thumb or make you think it did!.What also happens, crank is now spinning at engine rpm,and it may or may not come loose. If it does it can go several yards at very high velocities. If it doesnt and and it catches your shirt,,,well think of a pto shaft turning several times the speed. If your very lucky it will just strip you naked in a millisecond!more likely it will kill you just like they have done hundreds of others. If this does happen ,or should i say when this happens(you will find that killer if you crank enough different ones),dont hesitate, dont think, dont do anything but run!!!if you cant get to ignition safely while keeping tractor or lots of cover between you, just let it run until it runs out of gas or crank shaft breaks which ever comes first.Always check any new tractor you have to crank for wear,if its worn,,pull it with your truck and either replace worn parts,or go to the nearest deepest lake, take crank handle and throw it as far as possible into the deepest part...
