Is Glidden paint any good? About to spend big dollars to get my house painted--Glidden at Walmart is $7.00 a gallon cheaper than Clark Somethinganother sold at the local hdwe--and Glidden is $10 a gallon cheaper than Do IT Best local robbers--local hdwe store....Over yrs I have used Walmart(Color Places) paint with no problem whatsoever-------regular Walmart Exterior Latex enamel is half the price of the Do it best.................I want decent paint but it is one of those areas where you know you have been robbed and they laugh all the way to the bank..Opinions and suggestions please...Thanks Probably need about 10 gallons..

I hired a painter 2 weeks ago to paint my aluminum sided rental house. He used a latex acrylic paint. Before agreeing to the contract I looked at paints in Lowe's (just cause it is close by). Seemed to be the right stuff. I also looked at the house of a friend that he painted.
I'm not sure what brand he used (probably should have checked). Crew power washed the house, masked all doors, windows and fixtures. Removed the ornamental shutters and mailbox and trimmed any shrubs rubbing the house.
Spray painted it the next day. He also painted the shutters similar to the lite blue they had been and the walls at the patio are T-111 siding, also blue. I'm very satisfied as are my residents. House is 1400 sqft. on crawl space. $1440 total.

I've worked in paint manufacturing and sales,"buy cheap get cheap results"....what are you painting?, how long has it been ?,are you looking for long term or just freshing up something?
Tell me what your painting...I'll give you advise

Gables, carnish overhead garage, facings--been 10 yrs--very little peeling-just needs
washdown and paint-want it to last years..I really don't know what the gables are--maybe
masonite type stuff..

If no substrate is exposed ,I would stick with latex,if Masonite is is involved,or any other particle board or MDF,I would suggest an oil base primer, followed by latex,
Water base will swell fibers and cure in this state
Oil base will absorb into substrate without near as much swelling and seal better for a more uniform finish coat

Bought this house 20 yrs ago-well maintained before and since..Standard hip roof with 4 gables==sold to us as 2400 sq ft with double carport--anyway I guess the $1600 price I got sounds pretty reasonable-I furnish the paint..Includes painting outside pavillion shed 4 walls 8' square walled all sides with door -2 small gables---wash down and paint..

All good then, I would suggest upgrading to next "better grade" of paint,it truly will last longer, but then again I don't know your budget or how long your looking for it to last
Any other ?, I'll be glad to answer

Interesting that you bring up Glidden.
I just got done repainting the interior of one of my rental houses.
I do a lot of painting for work and always buy Behr from Home Despot.
Have excellent results with it.
This time I figured ahh it's a rental so I saved $5 a gallon and bought Glidden for the bedrooms.
Big mistake. I had to double coat everything. Grrr
Behr only takes one coat.
As Patina says; when it comes to paint you get what you pay for.
The extra 2 houra I spent recoating those two bedrooms cost me Way more than $5.

Best exterior paint I've ever used was Sherman Williams.

Ask painter to estimate how many gallons he will need. See if 5 gallon pails are cheaper than 5 separate gallon cans. Any decorator colors need to be reviewed also. If none you might consider some trim ideas. I see a lot of houses being trimmed in white that sets off the main color. I also see many trimmed in an earth tone.

just repainted my home. My buddy a professional painter gave me his advice cheap paint, cheap results, thus being said he recommended Sherwin-Williams exterior paint A100 pricey but covered well I used a airless Graco lower end gun and single coated and so far so good. 2yrs and going strong. Also everything is in the prep work.

I've done quite a bit of house painting as a small side business over the past 7 years or so. Spending the extra bucks goes a long way to saving money in the long run. Painting a house is a bit like roofing a house. Cheap paint and cheap shingles don't last. Benjamin Moore is a premium paint that is well worth the $$. Valspar is acceptable. I prefer Hirshfields, which is a local paint manufacturer out of Minneapolis, so I don't think their products are available in your area.

Thanks Colin--yea I know about roofing too--just spent $8550.00 on getting it re-roofed - 42 squares--did the architectural ones-sposta be 40 yr shingles-so I'm done with that--son can do whatever he wants cause I will be gone...Thanks for the paint advice-Gonna check with Sherwin Williams tomorrow then make the choice//I know also that Benj Moore is good but know of no supplier nearby..basically I think 8-10 years is almost a miracle out of any of it...even the good ones..

Tks Hobo--will have to try and locate local supplier--gotta get paint tomorrow or Sunday
Somewhere--Cirious how much per gal to expect to pay???

Ours is a light tannish with kinda cranberry sgutters and door trim--staying close as I can to same as it is..looks good together..

Good point on Benjamin Moore paint, went to a class on there paint and was amazed by how much better there paint flowed off brushes and rollers (good quality) the higher the quality of paint,
I'm sure other companies are similar
Do it right , do it once

Thanks everyone--will buy tomorrow--will be getting Good Paint......Sorry one more quesrion--ever heard of CLARK KENSINGTON ?? Local ACE Hdwe sells it--35.99 a gallon- they claim it is miraculous..I had never heard of it till I started paint shopping..

I prefer Sherwin Williams and I have had very good performance with their house paint. Last full paint on my house was 2005 and still in good shape.

If you are a Farm Bureau member you get a 25% discount on everything. Well worth the Farm Bureau investment.

LOL,
Some people gripe about all the OT threads on these boards.
But many OT threads get a LOT more responses than a typical question about tractors.
Take this one for example.

Best I remember it was in the mid to high 40's.... It is thick :!: so thick it would not drip off a brush so I am unsure how well it would spray... It was new Constitution it took 2 coats...

Tks --I have my limits--$35-38 is enough for any paint--mid to high $40 it would have to
self apply and refresh itself semi-annually..

Walston Thanks--I am a Farm Bureau member--just paid membership and $1535 house ins to them
and have never got anything out of them but another Bill..Will sure be calling SW today--
Thanks again..

I think we all get bored with the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over --I appreciate the responses and I always know I will get some good answers/suggestions and opinions.....Thanks again everyone..

It does have lifetime warranty for what it may be worth...

Bought it this morning at local(town where I work) Do It Best family owned hdwe store--they
said it is made by Sherwin Williams--warranty info so small I can't read it..I know all the
folks there including the owner so I don't expect a problem..

Cain't edit now... I have a 1100 sq ft rental I can paint the exterior in a few hours are less, that does not include pep and trim... I rent a profession sprayer are browner one.. I don't tape chit I hold up a piece of cardboard around the trim to catch the over spray... What over spray I have is gonna get covered when I trim the windows and doors out...

I like to paint I just need to get motivated..

Don't even know-carnish is plywood-overhead carport is plywood-gables(4) above brick line
is masonite I guess--groove ever few inches..

I know I do too many OTs but sure get some good advice and there is always someone on here
who knows something about the subject--great forum-good folks

Sorry about not getting back to you sooner Tom but had to work and had to go over to the boys house this evening, but I couldn't find my receipt so if my memory strikes me right it was about 40 a gal. unless you get a discount from a contractor, I was lucky :)

reading this thread, I feel lucky.
I painted my house back in 1980, still fine.
(trim needs painting every 5-10 years though)
Whether it was good paint, or the asbestos shingles, no idea,
but it's fine.
The paint? Sherwin-Williams. brush and roller applied.
needed a LOT, good paint, thick, covered great, but gallons emptied very quickly.
Sheds over the years got painted with Dutch-Boy satin acrylic latex (I think they are owned by Sherwin-Williams.)
also good stuff.
Got a few gallons in the back room from 2002.
Used one a few months back to paint a shed repair. still good

SW does package lots of different brands ,,, NAPA Martin Senuour paint is SW... I was just told that yesterday our local NAPA lost his franchise he told me all my stock of MS products were made by SW...
