OT - How much does a rock weigh?

You guys are smarter than me, looking at doing a retaining wall at my home. They sell the rock by the ton. Any guesses what a flat retaining wall rock would weigh, approximately 2-3' long by 1' tall by 1-2' deep? The lady from the quary didn't have a guess and I can't make it to the quary until maybe next week. Figured I would need around 30 of the rocks described above. Just trying to get a guess at what it would cost.

I guestimate weights like that based on concrete which goes about 150# per cubic foot. Rock like granite is a little heavier while limestone is a little lighter...hope this helps...OCG

All depends on the type of rock but figure around 150 to 175 lbs per cubic foot or a 2'x2'x1' about 6 or 7 hundred pounds .

I would be interested what price they give you on rocks that size. I have a few that size, that a few friends have wanted to purchase, but I didn't know what they were worth.

I would agree with the weights listed below, especially after having to move them around.

My guess is as follows based on how the volume of crushed stone is estimated by tonnage, yours is solid but the volume is close as in crusher run type road base there aren't many voids in the loose material

Rock = 3'-0" long x 1'=0" tall x 2'-0" deep = 6 cu.ft. 6 cu. ft./ 27 cu.ft per cu. yd. = 0.22 of a cubic yard, round to .25 approximately 1/4 of a cubic yard of rock each stone per the size given.

If I recall correctly the conversion for quarry goods is 1 cubic yard = 1-1/2 tons or 2,500 lbs.

If you divide that 2500 lbs by 4 = 625 lbs each rock per the size given, and of course the type of rock, density, weight is going to vary.

I'm 2nd guessing if that conversion is correct, I don't order crushed stone often enough to have it stick in memory, most other goods delivered are by the cubic yard, but I thought that it was 1 1/2 tons per cubic yard, might be wrong, so don't quote me and someone please make corrections !


30 rocks x 625lbs ea. = 18,750 lbs/2000 = 9.375 tons say x $25 per ton = $234.37 without tax, not sure what the cost per ton is in your area, just plugged in a number, forget what it's going for here at the moment.

Hope the math works for this and is within reason. I do the same thing nice to know what you need to spend before doing so.

They said $20/ton. I found an equation on the web saying multiply cubic feet of wall by 153lbs and that will give you the weight in lbs of rock needed. So the figures you guys gave me are pretty close (figuring about 18-20 ton). Thanks for taking your time to help!

Well, I donno. I heard Paul Harvey say this morning that at the Iowa State Fair they had a pumpkin that weighed 970 pounds, over half a ton. Now I always thought a ton was 2,000 lbs.

Not sure how much they had in this puppy but the bump stops were less than half an inch from the axle tubes... If that gives you any kind of questimation.... I just shook my head while they loaded....

I too have more field stone than I know what to do with... I've had folks driving 100+ miles to load as much as they thought their truck could handle for a $20 bill...
