OT: Killing grass in corn

I have some open pollinated corn that I grow to grind for cornmeal that has lots of grass in it. Anyone know of a herbicide that I can use to kill the grass without harming the corn? Poast specifically states not to use on corn.

We have used some on sweet corn, works great, but REAL expensive.

You could get rid of the grass the "old fashioned way" like I did in my youth with a HOE. :lol:

Was hoping to avoid the hoe. I did enough of that in my youth. When I grew up in the '50s we didn't have a tractor--just mules and hoes. After the ground dries out I will try to offset the disc hillers on my Super A and see if I can cover it up.

Good old atrazine is still out there. I use it,even in Roundup Ready corn.
Of course if you aren't certified there isn't anything you can use short of some kind of shielded sprayer to spray glyphosate.

Mix 1 gallon cheap White Vinegar, with 1/4 cup of Table Salt, and 2 tablespoons full of Liquid Dish Soap. Set your sprayer tip to "narrow spray" so that you ONLY spray the grass and NOT the corn stalks.

Grass should not be a problem if you have a super A :wink: I have a 100 and 140 the only reason I plant corn is to cultivate with them... The 140 is set up with rolling cultivators I was told once I got them set up correctly I would not take them off,,, They were right... I keep the hillers on the 100 and use them to cultivate/hill the corn also...

Once the corn gets a ft tall you can throw the dirt to it and side-dress it... When mine gets about waist high I use the hillers to hill it the last time by then there's no room for grass... Make fun out of it not work...

Many old, and even some new varities of corn are not tolerant of Accent herbicide. You might try a test spot first before broadcasting it over the entire field.

Laudis is another expensive one, but sweetcorn growers swear by it.

We were able to dribble enough out of used bottles to do sweet corn, it only takes a LITTLE.

Dealer who told me 1/2 lb of atrazine and cultivate on a good haying day that way when you pull the grass up it will dry out and die .if you cultivate when the ground is wet all you do is transplant the grass. Over time i started to skip the chemicals and just cultivate when dry and windy

I plant my silage corn behind first cutting ryegrass/clover hay and spray nothing, just plant thick and fertilize heavy, when hot weather come the ryegrass stops growing anyway and the corn will shade it out before that happens most years.

Dr.Walt, I have just (yesterday) applied this recipe to some honeysuckle and other weeds invading our garden. Did you have good success when you used it? I sprayed yesterday morning but got a little rain in the afternoon. I applied another dose this morning. Thanks in advance for a reply.
