OT: Kubota B6000

Hi All,

On a lark I pickup an old Kubota B6000 tractor
recently, and I've been fixing it up and trying to
evaluate it's condition.

Does anyone here have knowledge of this little
beast ? It's a small 2 cylinder Diesel, cute as a
button.

I think it is in fairly good condition, but I have
one worry. The gearcase has a whine while it is
in gear and running. It sort of sounds like when
a manual transmission car is in reverse.

Anybody know if the B6000 has spur gears and
therefore the sound is normal ?

That's an oldie but still unlikely that it has spur gears in the transmission. My B7200 does have spur reduction gears on the rear axles. It's been a while since I was in the transmission but IIRC all of the transmission gears were helical. It makes a fair amount of noise at this point but nothing I would call a whine. The input shaft on it has a CV joint type coupling that is really noisy when it begins to wear. I service it along with the clutch.

I'd be suspecting a bearing. Good news is they are easy to work on and parts are available.

Yup, it does have a CCW PTO (why ???). The
tractor came with a Hub City reverser, which I
gather is worth almost as much as the B6000

Problem is that when I fill the reverser with oil,
it all leaks out in a day or two. Doesn"t look
like it would be too difficult to split it and
re-seal it.

I"m not sure how to attach a picture, but I"ll
give it a try...

I don't know why the older over Asia tractors had a CCW PTO but many did. Looks like that machine was very well cared for. I tried to fix your image but this brain dead bulletin board server doesn't seem to like an https URL....

I sold the 6000s back in the eightys. the tranys were noisy when new, and yours looks almost new. dont worry, be happy. ccw pto, we sold them with woods mowers made for them.

Nope - it's a pretty common design on modern tractors and is just a way to further reduce the ring and pinion ratio. Here is a parts diagram of the outer axle. The large spur gear (40) is mounted to the the outer axle (10). An inner axle and smaller spur gear (not shown) comes off the differential via the the openings above the outer axle shaft and drives the larger gear producing something on the order of a 2:1 speed reduction with an attendant increase in torque.

Hey, how did you post that picture ? I"d love to
know the secret of how to do that.

Yes, that is my workhorse Ford in the background,
it is a 48 8N, and it is my "goto" machine.
Always starts, always gets the job done. Still
the original 6v front mount. I did hollow out the
front mount coil and then add a conventional round
can 6v coil.

I bought it 15 years ago, did some work to get it
in shape, and haven"t done much to it since
(except use it).

I may be hearing the spur gears you show above. I
jacked up the rear end of the tractor and rotated
the tires by hand. I heard some noise, but it
didn't seem like anything to be concerned about.

I'm going to take 47fivewindow's advice to drive
it and be happy
