OT: Outrider herbicide?

Has anyone used this stuff? Apparently it was developed by Monsanto but has just changed hands to Valent. Curious how it works in hayfields? What does it do to fescue, orchard grass, and timothy? Clover? How well does it control Johnson grass and at what stage should you spray?

I have read about this product. Everything I can find show it to be more targeted towards Bermuda grass and Bahia grass hay fields. It main target seems to be Johnson grass. Nothing I have read says it is safe to use in the more common cold climate grasses like yours are. What I can gather it that it will kill the grasses your growing if used in a very high rate and even with a low rate it will stun the grasses.

It is not labeled to be used on hay fields other than those seeded with Bermuda grass and Bahia grass. The label says NON crop areas when talking about any other grasses. The label warns about grass stunting even in those none crop areas. It also talks about a 12 month cropping restrictions on anything but wheat.

You should talk to a company representative about your grasses. They list this number for information. 1-800-332-3111

Just looking at the label leads me to think it would NOT be good for your hay fields.

I've actually talked to a couple of reps...and it seems like no one knows much about it. I've got some fields that Johnson Grass is becoming a huge problem. And I dont know what else to do. It says it's safe for fescue in non crop areas but I also read where it stunt it. I'd be willing to take some losses if it would help in the long run. I also seem to recall it being safe for native grasses..

I mean talk to the actual chemical company reps not your local coops.

As for the native grasses I read the entire label and it does not talk about it.

What I have found that works well for Johnson grass is a weed wick on a tool bar to apply Roundup. The Johnson grass will regrow faster than your other grasses. So it will be taller after cutting. Then take the tool bar weed wick and set it at a height that the Johnson grass gets hit but not your other grass. In a few years you can get a pretty good total control pretty cheaply.

Casey is you try it , please post the results. I have some that needs the same treatment. We have spot sprayed it and use wick bar but something like this would be better.

(quoted from post at 11:46:49 06/12/16) I sure like the weed wiper......pass on the details on setting it up. Thanks

I made mine. The Wicks and all the parts came from Sparyland. I think I had about $250 in it all together. I have used it for years. I first put it together for volunteer corn in soybeans. I bet that was 25 years ago.
