OT Storing Corn

Most of the neighbors have started combining corn, and a few of them are running into 15% corn. They are putting it straight into the bin without drying and running air on it. Will just air take out enough moisture that it will keep thru spring? Or are they figuring to get to spring and then run some more air on it to get it dry enough to keep till summer? I haven't started yet, still getting bin wired for electric, hand shelled a couple of ears last Sat and tested it and was 21%. Couple more weeks of warm weather and it might be down to 15% too. Anyone ever done this and got away with it? Chris

If the corn is cold (below 55) and goes into storage at 15% it will keep thru winter and spring.

If its over 75 degrees they are chancing it.
They need to cool it somehow.

the guys i worked for combined some corn 18% moisture. temps were about 0. all they did was run the fans and got the corn super cold.
would take a load of corn out of bins every week or so. the corn was all gone by time we started planting the next crop. they never ran the drier for it.
they also would check bins at least once a week to make sure was getting spoiled.

here we run corn into bins as soon as we can-- even at 22% we have run fans and dried it.

I have hauled corn in June at 18% that was not spoiled... we did run the fans when it was zero so it was frozen.

15% though will keep all summer in most places thats the most ideal moister level.

if you have 21% you can shell a small amout (a couple feet deep in your bin) and run your fan non-stop it will be dry in a few days--- pick some more .... and so on..

It should keep a year at 14.5

folks will do it with 16 & 17% here in the cold climates, if you get it moved before it warms up to 70 degrees it will likely be fine. This is without air, or not much. Has to go in the bin cold tho.

A lot will run 18% in the bin & run air over it for an extended time. Again with the cold climate, it will either dry or freeze up. You just need to watch it close. Check the bin every week for hot spots, & don't plan to keep it more than March. Good idea to take a load out now & then (or be feeding out of the bin) to move the middle core of fines & keep the hot spots moving a bit.

If you get to 20%, you best have some heat with the air and if not a dedicated drier then stir the bin as well.

It's not uncommon to start with 24% moisture around here, tho hybreds have gotten better drydown the past 3-5 years. One year I pulled a field of 32%, odd year, it wouldn't dry, was 110 day corn. We don't do 110 day any more.

Before we put a dryer in done it many years.Full floor aireation started arounnd 18-19% add a few feet every few days.Run fans till it gets very cold out.Mark
