OT; unwanted cat visits

My elderly mother lives in a residential area. The neighbors have several cats of which some come to her house and 'spray' around her bushes and porch.. Anyone know of a low cost mixture of something, that could be put down to would repel them.

Made by The Home of Quality Pet Products, four paws Keep Off! CAT and KITTEN Repellent. Nasty smelling stuff but it works. Got it at a pet food store.

I had problems with a skunk family wanting to live under my AC pad. I got some stuff called Repels-All made by Bonide. No more problems.
Google Repels-All for all kinds of information.

I have the same problem around my house and shop. I have 2 cats of my own, solely indoor cats that are spayed. Now, the neighbor lady has a whole bunch that she claims, that she feeds but won't get fixed, so they keep multiplying every year. Ce out of my shop one night and had 9 cats in the driveway that aren't mine. There is a local group that will fix stray cats for free if you trap yhem and bring them in. Not sure if she's for that idea, but as soon as they come on my property and spray all over my stuff, they're strays to me. The nasty old toms may disappear.

My Wife uses rubber snakes to keep the cats off the top of her little car, its worked so far.

Big problem with doing harm to another persons animals can be a big law suit. So you need a way that does no harm or you can end up in court very easy. They sell repellents for just that.

James, I don't see how you do it---nine dogs and about that many cats? And horses? I have one tiny little pomeranian that over a period of a year and a half has cost me about $3,000 in vet bills, flea dope, heartworm pills, grooming and food. It's $300 every six months when I get her flea pills and heartgard. Just a bag of doggie treats cost me $14 tonite. Your retirement check must be a lot bigger than mine.

Repells-All is garbage.

That stuff is gone after the first good rain, and you have to constantly reapply it.

I tried it to drive off a woodchuck living under a shed, and he just used it to season the possum he brought home for "dinner." Apparently the psycho liked things spicy.

He also took the bowl of antifreeze I left for him and made margaritas with it.

You don't need to hurt the animal. Trap, spay or neuter, release , works like a charm. There are groups everywhere that do this. Killing a Tom will only bring another Tom.

Isn't it your choice to spend all this money? We have a mess of dogs, about 13 or 14 at last count. 4 are livestock guard dogs. he only time any of them go to the vet is when there is an issue we can't work on at the farm, like a throat full of porky quills or getting hit by a car. They get fed and watered and we go to the free rabies clinic our town puts on. We also have a whole big mess of freakin' cats the lowlife trash from town have dumped out here. They get fed and fixed at the lowest cost place we can find, which runs about $35-40 a cat. We're also infested with rats and mice and for them we don't depend on useless cats, we use poison.

It's people choice to spend on what they spend on. Criticizing someone elses spending habits is an exercise in futility. It's human nature to do that, and I'm guilty of it too, but it's wasted effort whether it's their spending on pets, smokes, booze, cars, vacations, electronics, the McMansion, etc.

Agreed - 22 shorts or a CB cap are the way to go in town.

live trap em and haul them off, ive removed over 30 here the last several years, i put them in the woods near water and cover, mine are already wild cats, so they know how to survive, they also have small chance of encountering any other cats out there

Anti freeze poisoning is a slow and very painful death for the critters. It destroys the liver, but slowly and painfully. Maybe you could find a faster poison. Plus you can't control who or what might ingest the stuff.

A year ago last spring I left a tractor cab door open for five minutes and a tom cat got in there and sprayed. Woooeee the smell! That cat wasn't at the supper dish that evening. Just sayin.

That reminds me of a young tom we had at the last place. Dang idiot cat went around marking everything in the countryside against this travelling tom. And when I say everything......well, let me put it this way - wife and I were sitting on the edge of the deck outside when the cat came up and, out of nowhere, sprayed ME!! AAARRRGGGGGGGGG!!!!!

But, I gotta explain a little bit further about how bad a tom this visitor was. Our little tom was the only boy in the litter of about 6 kittens, so he was in charge of protecting his sisters, I suppose. Anyway, bigger, older tom would come around (about 3-4 times the size of ours) and our little tom would do everything in his power to keep the big tom away. Never worked, but still the big tom didn't like the nuisance. So one day, the big tom lured our li'l one out behind the barn. I had a real bad feeling about that as the big tom didn't run from NOTHING! I ran as hard as I could, screaming all the time for our tom to come back, but it was too late. Just as I was rounding the last corner, I heard it. A few more steps and I saw it. The big tom had lured our little one away, out of reach of us, and mounted him. Yes, you heard me right! Nailed him in the rear!! Then the big tom disappeared for a while.

Our little tom started acting funny, and definitely walked funny for a while. But what's worse, he was acting really weird after that, like he wasn't sure just WHAT he was supposed to do. Then something I didn't expect - our little tom would go out caterwauling just like the girls would. Took me a while to figure it out, but he was actually calling the big tom. Well, big tom heard it and did come, but instead came for the girls. Got absolutely no resistance from the li'l guy. Our tom would be crying on one side of the property (making LOTS of noise), meanwhile the big tom was on the other side having a blast. ...Yeah, I tried to give him a "blast" several times, but this cat was VERY well informed on what a rifle was!! If he saw me without a rifle, he didn't run. If I had a rifle, he would.

Took several months for our tom to get back to normal - only, he wasn't really back to normal. He was more aggressive than before; more like the larger tom. When we moved, the new owners kept all the cats. Can't say as I miss them. Only one we kept was a tiny little thing that the wife kept after its mother abandoned it.
