OT: Whats this weed?

I tried posting this picture on 'Kounty Life'. But it wouldn't post there. Any one know what this weed is?
Maybe someone here can help me with my question on 'weed control'. Here is my post on 'Kountry Life'.

"How do I control weeds in my Garden and Food Crop? I'm not interested in organic. Just want to get rid of the weeds. Last year my wife pulled some during the week and I would on weekends. I'm gone during the week. They started getting out of hand. The local Farm Store recommended a product called, "Over The Top". Came in two parts, Poison and oil. I followed the instructions. Sprayed three times three weeks apart. It never killed anything. The main culprit was a weed that looks somewhat like Marigold. At least till you put them side by side and compare them. I didn't think it would get that tall. But it stayed just ahead of my corn in the food crop. Anyone know what this weed is called? I see all these commercial farms of corn, Soybeans and such along the road with no weeds in them. How do they do it?"

" How do they do it?""

They do it by turning the soil into nothing more than a sponge for some of the most dangerous chemicals known to man. The genetically alter the plant so that it is not effected by the herbicide they pour into the soil which eventually gets into the groundwater.

" I'm not interested in organic."

You need to do some reading. A tractor board isn't the place for it. The link below might get you interested.
Why organic?

Thanks for the link Bruce....you may want to look at the info on this site as well.....Organic Valley is now the largest Organic Coop in the world....

Why Organic

kinda looks like russian thisle, has it ever budded out on the top, kinda like pods, maybe two or three buds on a plant. Russian thisle will get two or three feet tall if you let it and have sticky leaves when half mature. Generally a broad leaf spray will kill it.

Yep, looks like Russian Thistle. Around here, for every seed that hits the ground, 5 plants come up.
The "neighbor" has a pasture next to my place and lets them go to seed each year and then mows them down. Looks like a snow storm as they come our way.

That's what some one on 'Kountry Life' Said too.
There are no prickly leaves. Never seen a flower blossoms like on Thistle. Never seen one break lose and tumble in the wind.
What I don't understand is how I get rid of it and other weeds. Should I spray weed killer two weeks before preparing the ground for planting? Should I spray once a month for a year then plant the next year? Weed killer will kill my crops to if I spray while the crop is growing?

"most dangerous chemicals known to man"
Yeah, That sounds like what I need.
Do know the names of those chemicals?

All I use is roundup - works for me on pretty much anything.
I use a back pack sprayer and I am very selective about what I spray.

The short answer to all of those questions is that you do not need any of that.

The longer answer depends on:

the weeds you are trying to control

your location

crops planted & amount

if you have a tractor or a means of mechanical cultivation.

Here is a wikipedia entry on this species of ragweed.

It's a very common weed and is usually an indicator of poor soil or poorly managed soil.

It is very easy to control. Normal tillage will take care of it. If you're planting a garden, hand weeding will do the trick nicely. If you're planting row crops, timely cultivation should do the trick along with timed planting.

Like Bruce, we are organic and have not used herbicides on our farm for 30+ years. I cannot give you any advice on herbicide use. I would be happy to give you more detailed advice on organic weed control methods, if you like. My email is always open.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check that out. Yes, I've got a 3 pt cultivator, Walk behind tiller and such. Those aren't going to help much in a growing food plot for deer where the seeds are just broadcasted. I had limed and Triple 13ed it. It was coming nicely till the weeds took over. Mostly that Rag weed. $100 worth of seeds from Cabalas plus I had found about 100 gal of a corn spill in a truck stop a year earlier. Fed most of it straight to the deer. Still had some left over come spring and threw in about a quart of that out. It was doing real good. Lot of work and money went into in the end just growing weeds for the most part. Plus my pasture land hasn't been used for years. Just now getting it so I came bushhog it. Would like to get rid of the junk that grows there and grow something like Alfalfa or such. I don't think what I need done can be done without some chemical help.
