OT Wise Up Plus

This is concerning the thread about Roundup not working this year for me.

Hobo,NC recommended Wise Up Plus and I purchased 2 1/2" gallons.

Hobo, if your reading this, all the instructions are in "per acre" and what crop. I'm using it in a gallon hand sprayer. I used to mix the Roundup at 6 or 7 OZ. per gallon. Can you recommend what to mix the Wise Up Plus at?

This is for all the weeds I can't get at with my brush cutter.

could you just email the pproduct comppany and ask since you bopught their grart pproduct what is the ratio for use by gallons only??

Well, I kind of figured it would be easier to just ask someone who's actually used the stuff.

If you are having probles will kill, put a few drops of liquid dish soap in the mix. Is a good surfactant (sp). A few years ago, I tried and treid tokill some horseradish in my garden. even tried roundup straight out of the bottle, nothing worked. A farmer friend told me about the soap in the mix. Well I tried it and killed all the horseradish that I sprayed according to the label.

Yeah I've heard that about the dish soap and will try it. Maybe you didn't read my other thread. I have been using the Roundup concentrate at 6 to 7 OZ. per gallon and it has worked for 20 years. This year it just didn't work like it used to work

Wow, 6 or 7 ounces seems like alot! I use it at 2 ounces a gallon, and it has killed everything it come in contact with. Per the instructions, it's 1 to 2 ounces depending on what you're trying to kill.

Never mind, I forgot you were asking Hobo.

WiseUp Plus is 41% glyphosate - Roundup Concentrate is 18%. So the WiseUp Plus contains 41/18=2.28 times higher concentration of active ingredient. If you were mixing the Roundup at 7 oz/gallon (yields a 1% spray mixture) you would mix 7/2.28 = 3.07 oz/gallon WiseUp to get the same concentration.

Better double check my math but I believe that is correct.

remember the other thread & what people (some) don't seem to realize is that RoundUp is available in several concentrations (41%, 18%, 2% among others perhaps) and 2% is ready to use-no mix, whereas at the other end of the spectrum, with the 41% you mix 2.5 oz per gallon of water. And guess what the resulting mix is overall 2%........but just about 1/70 th the cost of applied mixture. Your 6-7 oz per gallon was probably also 2% end mix & the product you just bought is 41% according to web page referenced.....so 2.5 oz/gal

Got to read the labels and compare apples to apples - Roundup is sold in at least two different concentrations:

RoundUp Concentrate (18% glyphosate) at 6oz/gallon = .84% spray
Roundup Super Concentrate (41% glyphosate) at 2 oz/ gallon = .65% spray

WiseUp Plus is equivalent to RoundUp Super Concentrate

'm with you up to the 0.84 & 0.65......how are those numbers derived?

Well freshman chemistry was a while ago but here goes:

6 oz RoundUp concentrate added to 128 oz H2O = .047 reduction (roughly)
18% Roundup concentrate x .047 reduction = .844% solution

More precisely for Dr. Bryce:

6 oz of 18% Roundup = 1.08 oz glyphosate
1.08 oz glyphosate in 128 + 6 = 134 oz of solution = 1.08/134 = .806% glyphosate solution

Have I missed something obvious?

2 oz to the gal dose it for me,,, sometimes I add a tad more,,, the soap is already in it add more if you like... Soap adds wetabilty are in other words it does not bead up and run off,,, it spreads out so it can be soaked up by the plant sorta like spilling water on paper...

I am not into math,,, I always make sure my customers can read the TOTAL figure at the bottom of the bill ,,, the rest of the chicken scratch is for me....

Thanks for all who chimed in with some info. I mixed up a little test. My hand sprayer is actually 1.5 gallons. I used 7 oz. in it and sprayed some test stuff. I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

I did read in the instructions that the "surfactant" was already in the stuff. But I put in a couple shots of Dawn. anyway Not enough to create any suds though.

I noticed when I sprayed that the weeds had a sheen of the spray instead of the usual kind of beads on them. I'll let you guys know how the 7 oz. worked. If two oz. per gallon is enough I'll probably have to cut back on the next batch. I'll use whatever I have to, I just want the stuff to work.

Like most herbicides, too much is bad for the environment. That book that is attached to the container has all sorts of warnings and reasons as to why to mix it at such a rate. The top reason is because it's enough.

Hobo,
the water needs to be made wetter by adding the chemical in soap as the LOC from Amway has.
We add soad or other Surfactants to get water to go deeper into clays prior to pouring concrete so the clay has expanded as much as it ever will and not harm the concrete later. Here is a site that may explains wetter water.

I'm aware of the environment. My water supply is from a well on my property. I have 5 acres but even when changing oil in my cars I don't dump the oil in the dirt. I refill the new empty oil bottles with it and take it in to the parts store for recycling.

I only sprayed a few different weeds with that concentration to see how the stuff worked. I can still add more water and dilute the batch I have now.

I think I have figured out why you asked. I was reading the little Monsanto booklet on Roundup Max usage (48.7% concentrate) and their tank mixing table says 2oz / gallon = 1.5% - I said no way!!! Further study reveals their 1.5% is simply the dilution factor for the concentrate (1.5% of 128 oz = 1.92 oz) - not the percentage of active ingredient in the resulting spray mix. That is actually .8%
So if we wanted the equivalent spray mix with an 18% concentrate we would need to use 2 x 48.7/18 = 5.4 oz.

I know you pretty well and I knew there had to be a solid reason behind your question. I have been re-doing the math in my dreams all night long

orry, didn't mean to ruin your sleep! I thought it peculiar that they do it that way, too, "simply the dilution factor for the concentrate------ not the percentage of active ingredient in the resulting spray mix." They had me going off thinking by weight for a bit there, with their "480 grams /liter or 4 #/gal of glyphosate in the form of of isopropylamine salt, equivalent to356 grams/L or 3#/gal of the acid, glyphosate"..?????????

So, in the end, if a user follows their mixing instructions, they end up with a real mix of 0.8%, whether ~6 OZ of 18%, 2 2/3 oz of 41%, or 2 oz of 48.7%. Right? Which is exactly what should be expected.

You had to go there didn't you - I was NOT going to discuss that ingredients list!!! I played with it for a bit but cannot figure out how they are getting that 48.7% number - weight or volume - salt or acid. Quantities are stated using both weights and volumes so if we knew the specific gravity of the concentrate perhaps that would work out. Or perhaps its molar concentration

Yes - the basic mixing instructions all seem to get you something in the neighborhood of .8% concentration (assuming volume metrics) although at least one of the "ready-to-use" products says 2% on the label. The RTU brush/poison ivy products are 1% glyphosate + .1% triclopyr and/or higher concentrations of other herbicides. Cary's mix worked out to 1.5% IIRC.

PS> My sleep is easily disturbed - if it wasn't herbicide concentrations I'd likely have been having one of my recurring golf nightmares:

1) Have to tee off from inside a house with little tiny windows
2) Can't get the ball to stay on the tee and crowd waiting behind me is growing
3) Every spot on the tee has an obstruction in my backswing - see (2) above
4) Lost all my clubs on a previous hole and can't find them - see (2) above
5)...

Sick puppy ain't I
