Outer Banks!!

I know this is a little off the subject, but here it goes.
My wife and I decided to take 4 of our six children to Portsmouth Island, NC for some cabin camping and surf fishing. We have been planning this trip for a few months and are looking forward to it. My question is, Has anyone heard of a new law that prohibits the use of Lead weights? I just happened to be reading the Portsmouth Island Fishing forums and noticed some remark about that in one of the topics. So, I posted the question on the seldom veiwed Forum, and will probably have to wait a couple days for a response.
If any one has any info, it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED,
Thanks,

Brent----that was a question proposed at our annual County Conservation Hearings this Spring.

QUESTION 61 – Lead reduction in fishing tackle
Lead in the environment is poisonous to wildlife. This proposal is designed to reduce the incidence of lead poisoning (lead toxicosis) in waterbirds, shorebirds and secondary poisoning of raptors, such as eagles and ospreys by reducing the amount of lead added to Wisconsin waters due to lost fishing tackle. Studies have shown wildlife is most likely to ingest fishing tackle measuring less than 2.5 cm (1 inch) length and 25g (1 ounce) in weight. Removing lead in fishing tackle of this size would be the most effective way of protecting wildlife.
The Federal lead shot ban for waterfowl hunting, and state restrictions on lead use in fishing tackle in MA, VT, NH, NY and ME have reduced toxicosis in waterfowl. A follow up study on the effectiveness of lead free fishing tackle in New England has shown a reduction in bird mortality. A similar ban in Wisconsin will protect our wildlife resources and migrating populations moving through our state.
Since inexpensive non-lead alternatives to lead sinkers and jigs are currently being manufactured and are available to retailers at a reasonable cost, transition to non-lead alternatives will not put an undue hardship on Wisconsin anglers.
Would you support efforts by the state to phase out the use of lead fishing tackle less than one inch in length and less than one ounce in weight for use in Wisconsin waters?

The county wildlife biologist stated that 1 BB sized lead shot ingested is enough to kill waterfowl.....

I appreciate your response. I am willing to do whatever it takes to ensure my children and grandchildren get to enjoy the outdoors as I have. We will be stopping at a major tackel store before we hit the beach. I will look for such alternitive sinkers. As I have read in alot of articles, the fishing industry does far more damage than us few single fisherman can do. I do not see how we are alotted only one Red Fish a day, but the commercial guys are forgiven if they destroy hundreds a day. That makes no sense to me. I eat all the fish I catch, but they are allowed to use nets and throw the dead ones back to sea. Over the past few years, we have seen thousands washed up on the beach, that were clearly killed by nets. My family and all my freinds pratcice catch and release. We only keep those that are leagal and what we will eat.
As for the question I asked earlier, I was not aware of such studies or practices that were being set in place. In the past 2 hours, I have also had to explain to my children, why these things are what they are. Just yesterday, I had to explain why Duck hunters had to use steel shot. The topic came up, because one of my daughters saw a Ducks Unlimited sticker and then the conversation turned to the high cost of duck hunting -special guns, dogs, boats, and other high cost time consuming things.
Anyway, I got off the topic a little.
Thanks for your responses,

You're free to use lead weights in NC for fishing, my friends and I use lead. You're also on target on the commercial fishing issue. Last week one of my friends caught 35 speckled trout, only two were of the legal limit; he kept those two for supper and released back 33. Hours later, a commercial outfit set up a net in the area, having heard him over the radio speak about his catch. The commercial guys caught hundreds, of all sizes, most far too small to sell. In this state, politics rules eastern commercial fishing; a sad story. I also fish South Carolina where the recreation anglers have equal say and the marine biologists are listened to seriously. SC has excellent inshore fishing because they prohibit trawling inside the breaker line, and consequently have shell beds and grass beds undisturbed. Sorry to get so OT. I hope you and your family have a great time at Portsmouth.

(quoted from post at 14:50:11 05/20/10) Thanks Jim,
We have already begun loading coolers. Can't wait to get there in the morning.

In 1985 it cost me and a bud $1000 and a lost days work to whoop up on a boat load of commercial fisherman run'n inside the break'ers,,, we tossed them 4 oz lead weights at them and it sounded like the weights were run'n laps around the inside of the troller,,,, you know you are in trouble when the law shows up and knows the fisherman by first name,,, Hyde county is the poorest county in the state,,, I was told to tote a pocket full of cash to court,,, they were right,,, judge could see thru my pockets  ,,, the fisherman did not lie,,, told the truth,,, thought we we good to go,,, they were in the wrong but 2 wrongs does not make a right,,, Lesson learned,,, don't do stupid things in the poorest county in the state,,, they gonna get your money unless you have a skirt you can pull over your head 8)....

Set all day in court,,, all the cases herd were either non support are commercial fish'n violations,,, commercial fisherman could care less about the law,,,, I now understand why,,, fish in protected waters and make as much in one day as you could fish'n legal all week,,, so whats a $500 fine when you can make 5 times that much a day illegal,,, just don't put the boat are licence in your name,,, the court will take the licence but not the boat (its not yours for them to take),,, get a new set of licence in someone else's name and back to fish'n the next day

That's my outer banks story,,, fish'n not that good out their anyways, hot and the skeeters will tote you away....

Last I knew the SALE of lead sinkers under a certain size has been banned in most states, NOT the USE of them.
However USE has been banned in most Federal Game Preserves.

Best is to consult the local Game Police in the area you intend to fish. A simple phone call could save you enough money for a return trip next year...
