overdrive question on 8N

[jpi72]

I have purchased an 8N tractor with an overdrive. The owner said there were two types of overdrives. Were they a factory overdrive or aftermarket? What can you tell me about the overdrives. Mine is just a high and a regular speed.

On an 8N, it would not be factory. Could be dealer installed.
Most also changed the PTO speed also.

Thank you for the information about the PTO speed.

Most likely you have a Sherman Step-Up unit. You can Google for more info.

The most common is the Sherman step up but there was also what was called a Howard but I think it was an under drive

The Howard Reducer transmission is a deep underdrive to allow the tractor to go slow enough to let the Howard Rotavator work
