Overhaul kit for 8n ford

Was looking at the over haul kits on ebay. I suppose all liners are the same except thickness. They have .40 and .90 listed. What one is better. Are the pistons a little smaller on the .90 than the .40 which would decrease horse power I think. Not sure if im going to do this but wanted to find out as much as I can before I do. Seems to be a lot of people on here with a lot of knowledge on these 8n tractors. All comments welcome. Thanks Norm

The internal dimensions of the sleeves are the same. The bore they fit in is different. The pistons are the same. You need to tear down your engine before you order the kit. Probably will need to wait until the crank shaft is measured and ground if necessary. I have rebuilt three 9N engines. All had the thin wall sleeves. I replaced them with new thin walled sleeves. I have been happy with the results.

Norm.........heres the deal, yer 9N/2N/8N pistons are same diameter. Early 9N/2N/8N's were 4-ring pistons. At the time the 8N changed to the more normal 5-nipple sidemount dizzy, they changed the pistons to the more common 3-ring style. The 9N had common castiron cylinder holes, when the 2N came out (1942) 'cuz of WW2 restrictions, Ford developed the steel sleeve (0.040) fer longer life. Howsomevers; with the development of chrome plated piston rings, they didn't seal very well against the steel sleeves. Hence, the 0.090 castiron sleeve which does seal chrome piston rings. Now ya haffta re-bore the block to take the larger diameter castiron sleeve. Re-boring engine blocks is common machine shop procedure. I use "dry-ice" to shrink the sleeve before insertion into the cylinder hole. ........HTH, Dell, the historian

One thing to remember when you tear down the engine and before you order any parts. If you are removing the sleeves for replacement (Which may not be needed if the sleeves are good), be sure to remove all of them. Those sleeves can cover up cracks in the block that you cannot see with them in the engine.

PS:

I already have my IRISH MUG OUT. Will search around for proper COUNTY for Harp Player and the "FIDDLER".
