Overhauling an engine.

So I found a JD 3010 propane engine, Has sat for 3 years and has water in the cylinders. I have never attempted to resurrect something like this before.

I know I need to take it completely apart, and obviously clean it. The end goal is to transform it into a standalone gas power unit.

Friend of mine joked , Once you take it apart you might as well bore and stoke it, that will make it really go.

All joking aside I have a several question, The cylinder walls are badly rusted from what I can see from the spark plug hole, [haven't removed the head yet], Should I have it bored? If so will I need a different piston ring set than stock? What exactly is stroking an engine and what does it do?

That's a sleeved engine is it not?

Should be a wet sleeve engine. Replace sleeve and piston assemblies with new, recondition head and likely be good to go.

They are (today) an oddball engine with few if any applications other than the tractor, so spare blocks, etc. are getting hard to find.

They also have a Lanchester-style engine balancer with lots of $$$ wear parts that may need attention and may be getting hard to source.

A poor choice for a power unit engine going forward into the future, IMHO.

I agree! Why this engine? Do you want an engine that runs propane? Take the fuel system off of the Deere and put it on some other RUNNING 200CID engine, Chrysler slant sixes are pretty darn tough, find one in an swather or combine it will already have a belt drive governor set up. Overhauling that 3010 engine will certainly help you deplete the green in your pockets for what you will end up with in the end.

A basic in-frame overhaul kit for the 201 gas/LP is $700-800:

"Stroking" an engine means increasing the stroke of the pistons for more displacement. This entails a custom crankshaft with more throw, and custom piston rods and usually pistons. On a small block Chevy, it can be done with off the shelf parts, but for a John Deere 201 engine, it would all have to be custom made from scratch. Think $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Leave the engine in the tractor and find something else . Or is this a PTO powered load from a tractor ?
Better yet obtain a later natural aspirated diesel and run it on LP via pilot injection . Dual fuel capable and no ignition system .

The four cylinder Waterloo is an orphan . This is why Deere sold kits to install the four cylinder 300 series Dubuque/Saran engine in a 3010/3020.
Making them into a 2510/2520.

Usable 3010/3020 diesel blocks used to bring very good money due to their scarcity. I think the gasoline and LP engines blocks sharea common block that is a shorter stroke and deck height than the diesel block. Your LP block might still be worth a fair amount even as a rebuildable core. It might bring enough to buy a running 4020 gasoline engine or some other good running engine.

Junk combines with running engines are usually cheap to find. Often the engine, radiator, bell housing and output shaft are all mounted on one removable frame. That could make a good power unit.
