I just saw a track hoe about that size today that had a bucket on it nearly 3 ft. wide. (it wasn't ovesize like your picture, just extra wide.) I was guessing he was wanting to do some fine grading with the bucket.

Made a cool talking point for the locals. You can see the knuckle isn’t hooked to the bucket just resting inside the bigger mount pins.

Photoshop can work wonders.
I did see a mini-excavator with a 3' wide bucket. The county highway used it to clean out/restore side-ditches.
