overriding clutch

I see discussion about this device, and since I have just inherited a TO-30, I am trying to learn about this tractor. Will someone explain what an overriding clutch is for and what its purpose is. I also have a bucket on this unit that will not raise. Help!!

Override clutches allow the tractor to drive the impliment. The implimant can not drive the tractor. What it means to you, you can stop before you crash into something and killing you or an innocent bystander.

Your tractor has a transmission driven pto. When it is engaged and the transmission is in gear both the pto and the wheels are being driven as a system. Stepping on the clutch does not "break" the mechanical connection between the pto and the drive wheels.
If you have an implement with a high rotational inertia like a rotary cutter being driven by the pto and you want to stop the tractor, you will find that stepping on the clutch will not help you stop your motion because the inertia of the cutter will drive the pto shaft which will also drive the rear wheels through the transmission and make a rapid stop very difficult. If you are about to hit a fence or a tree or run ito a ditch or pond, this could pose a problem.

The ORC is a sprag clutch that only allows torque transmission in a single direction. It"s kind of a "torque check valve". The ORC ratchets if the driven implement tries to drive the pto shaft and allows the tractor to be stopped relatively quickly. If you have a TO-30 and you plan to use a rotary cutter then you should have an ORC for safety"s sake.

Your loader bucket not lifting, it depends on the system used as to why it isn't lifting. If you only have the tractor lift lever, make sure that the PTO is in drive and then the Lever should lift the loader. If there are other levers on the tractor for the loader, these divert the oil and they need to be set in the correct position. If you can send me a picture of the tractor around the driving position I will be able to recognise just what you have and then be able to tell you how to operate it. It could also be the Tractor Hydraulics themselves that have a problem and we would need to try and work out just what it is, it maybe is only the Control Valve stuck which is usually easy to rectify. If you email me direct at the address below and send pictures of the tractor I will work out what it could be and send you the info you may need to repair it or operate it, depending on what it [email protected]
