Paint codes for 62 851

Hello everyone. I have a 62 851 that I am hoping to paint this summer. I have never done this before. when I look through the paint codes on the site I see med gray,light gray and then dearborn red, vermillion red. Which are the correct colors that I am supposed to use. I plan on doing this in either PPG Omni or MS Crossfire. Thanks.

The 801 will use the lighter gray and the orange/red vermillion.
The darker colors are for 800 (pre 1959) and older tractors.

The exact PPG code has been debated here and most can not agree what it is. Since Ford/NH sells the color you need you could always buy a spray can of each and have PPG color match it.

Remember the prep work and primer is the most important part. You can spend as much in primeing a tractor as some spend on the whole job but I think it is worth it in the long run.

I used PPG Omni on my tractor with the two part epoxy primer EPX900/901. Was not to worried about the exact color so I just picked one out of their catalog. It is also a working tractor so I did now worry to much about sand scratches but you could use a good surfacer over the primer if you wanted. You will also need a gallon of cleaner. I am very happy with the results I got and feel it will protect the metal (my main objective) longer and better than tractor paint would have.

The epoxy primer has a time window for painting over but if you plan ahead you can work with this and is well worth the extra effort for the protection the expoy primer gives you.

The main concern or problem with using good automotive paint is the harderner requires a special forced air respirater. PPG salesman may or may not tell you about this or even agree it is needed so they can make the sale but it is right there in the PPG spec sheet.

Now on my '62 801 it is medium gray. The can on Van Sicckle says '65 and newer on light gray. I sampled it on mine along with the dark grey just to see. Neither matched, Which i knew the dark would'nt just wanted to see.

Last week at our local CNH dealer I asked about paint for my 58/861 and was told it is the medium gray with the red/orange. That is also what is on it now (don't know if its the original paint or not).
