paint problems

A few years ago I had a jet star painted. I used agco prairie gold and a brown paint mix by ppg. I think I used an automotive red primer. Can't find the can. The brown seems to have a red tint to it.I have a 670 painted with the same brown. It looks totally different. Could it have absorbed the primer turning it a little red. The guy who painted it has been for 30 years and he didn't seem to know. Why I'm asking is I'm getting ready to paint a 4 star with equipt co paint and I don't want it to happen again. Should I try another primer? Also seems too brittle.Maybe not bonding with the primer. Anyone have ideas? Thanks

I won't use red primer on any of my tractors. I go with gray. Gray is more of a neutral color and is closer to a bare metal color than any of the others. You really don't have to worry about the brands of paint so much as the types of paint instead.

I did go gray primer for the rims and sheet metal on the 4 star. The pg3 covered alright but seems to be brittle and chips real easy.would the primer from equipment color be a better choice? should I go with an epoxy primer? Do I or should I strip the red primer off to use the other primer or can I go right over it. Sorry for all the questions, painting isn't my gig.

kmms,

I would go with epoxy primer on cast iron and over any bare metal. The reason is epoxy sticks much better than urethane primer, but you can't sand epoxy very well. You can use urethane primer over existing paint, just scuff the surface with a red scotch brite first. If your sandblast your tinwork down to bare metal, I would start with an epoxy primer/sealer and then shoot it with high build urethane primer and sand it smooth.

good luck on your project.

You can put gray right over the red with out sanding. I would go with their primer too. That way it is a match and is compatible. Epoxy primer is better suited for pitted metal and is more self leveling and harder once dry. Are you cutting that PG3 with anything before you spray it and are you using hardener in it?

I ordered reducer and hardener when I bought the paint. All that should be good. My painter used it when he shot the rims. I'll Have to order primer for the rest of the tractor.

You do know that there were two different "browns" used on MM's don't you?

The early one has almost a reddish metallic look to it, while the later one is just brown. The 4 stars mostly were the early color.

I went with a dana brown on my 62 jet star. I will be useing the metallic bronze for my 60 4 star. I don't think the dana brown was the right mix. Too dark and with a red tint.I won't be useing it again. It looks alright setting by itself but when you put it next to a different tractor you can really tell the difference. Thanks for all the help. Kurt

We were an AGCO dealer for years. I hated their paint. Not only did they not have a good selection of colors, the quality is awful. I have been pleased with Napa paint
