Paint restoration

I've seen some stuff advertised on Classic Tractor Fever that you can put on your old tractor and buff out and it may or may not bring life back to your paint job. What product do they advertise, as I only watch the show when I visit my parents? Any other products that might be better for restoring some shine to your old paint job? Thanks

I have used this product to restore (to the degree possible) painted equipment, trucks, and tractors. Any color change or stains that are deep into the finish or rust stains (not the rust) will not be removed by a buffing compound. All they can do is remove oxidized paint and expose the less faded material below. Once buffed (and before the paint is removed to show metal or primer) it needs to be clear coated. There are good clearcoats that are matt/eggshell/low gloss that look much better on surfaces that have old paint, than super shiny Wet look. Jim

The polish with the highest grit would be 3M Machine Polish. That's where I start with really poor condition tractors. Or Corvettes.

The stuff they advertise is called FLTIZ. I've never used it myself so I don't know how well it really works.

I like to use flood penetrol make sure you get the oil base one

About the only thing you could buff is the sheetmetal. If you can access it or remove it from the tractor you could buff it with an auto polisher and rubbing compound. This will actually remove the oxidation of the paint on the surface. Then use a car wax on all of the tractor. I would recommend a 7 auto polisher with a lambswool bonnet. Harbor Freight sells a cheap one that works good.

The best thing I have used on my old sheet metal is Turtle Wax rubbing compound. With a rag and a few hours of manual labour I've made my old oxidized paint shine like new on some. No need to clear coat as I just put on a coat of wax after I'm done. I much prefer the look of polished old paint than the new mirror finish of modern paint.

Thats why I posted the Turtle product and a photo of the results. Sometimes the stuff they push on tv shows is no better than an old product that has been around for years. And I'm not getting sponsored by the manufacturers to praise the product.
