I am undertaking the restoration of a GP. I have many parts that need rust and old paint removal. I have a media blaster that works, but it goes through a lot of media to get the big parts clean. I was wondering if I first used a chemical paint stripper and then followed up with media blasting if that would make the process quicker and use less media. Does anyone have experience doing this?

How big are your parts? A media blasting cabinet is for smaller items. For larger parts like cast housings and tinwork, you need a sandblaster setup using a sand media or Black Magic. If you're doing rusty parts you need an aggressive media and enough air to power the equipment. Chemical stripping first is a waste of time and money if you're going to sandblast anyway.

This might need multiple methods. For typically rusted sheet metal I wire wheel, apply rust converter,prime and paint. Once converter is applied, don't wait very long before priming or piece will begin rusting again. To put a piece in long term "holding pattern", I apply a coat of aluminum paint. For smoother finish, sand following converter,apply primer followed by filler-primer and wet sanding.
For delicate or precision parts, consider electrolysis. Long skinny part? No need for 50 gallons in large container. Dig a trench or make temporary form then line it with sheet plastic.

The paint remover made today is pretty bad. It will work but be prepared to keep applying remover for a half hour or so. Then use a power washer to clean off the residue. Dry the parts off as well as you can and set them in the sun to dry so it dries quickly. You can re-use the media from sand blasting. Where ever you are sand blasting put up tarps to contain the media in that area. Then sift the media through screen wire to remove larger particles. I cut the bottom out of a 5 gallon water cooler jugs and made a frame to hold screen wire over it inside the jug. Just set the jug on top of the sandblaster bucket and pour the sand through the strainer. It has to be shaken for the sand to pass through. I just use cheap play sand from the box stores for media but you have to sift it when new as well.
