painting chain

I am in the process of restoring a planter. I would like for the chain to look decent instead of rust. The problem is that in the past when I have spray painted it, the chain looses its flexibility and gets stiff. anyone have any suggestions to make it look decent?

I recently painted the sway chains on my three point hitch. After sand blasting I put a length of wire through one end to suspend the chain from a hook above. Then epoxy primed the chain and simply wiggled the chain around every few minutes as the primer dried then sprayed on three LIGHT coats of paint and again wiggled the chain every few minutes as the chain dried. Be sure to rotate suspended end of chain so as to get under side of links painted. I have also used this method on the chains of my hunting treestands several times over the years and do not end up with stiff fused links. Take your time and use light coats

I agree with joe.. Painting chain is difficult.. and must be done with multiple coats to prevent areas that stick and block the paint.
