how warm does it need to be to paint with oil based paint?

All depends on the paint. Either ask the place you got the paint from or look at the MFR website for technical details. Cold affects flash time and recoat times along with pot life.

You can spray it at any temp you want. If you want it to stay where you put it and dry to a shine then you need 60 or better. Anything less and you are asking for trouble. If it's worth doing right then get it 60+. If it is just an old gravity box then have at it.

Make sure the metal is at least as warm as the air, or the paint will slide. The metal can be warmer than the air.

I did some painting on a tractor in a barn last winter at around 35-40 degrees over rustoleum rusty metal primer and it came out fine BUT it took 3 to 4 days to take an initial cure.

My buddy is a body man so he always gives best case sinario. He says 70 degrees. I paint at any temp and then stick a work light near the part to help dry and harden the paint.
so like the other posts say, depends on how nice you want it. My stuffs not show quality just colored, Ed
