Painting prep question

I'm repainting the bedroom in my house. The walls will be painted with flat or matte latex, and the window trim, door trim, and baseboards with semi-gloss latex---the same as what's there now. What is the best prep for this job, particularly the parts that are painted with semi-gloss? I've done lots of painting, but I always wonder if there are better, faster ways to prep surfaces that I don't know about. Thanks.

I make sure they are clean (a little soap and water/tsp) and a light sand and I go at it. never had a problem.

Stan,

The issue that trips most people up is painting latex paint over top of gloss or semi-gloss oil paint. You cannot get this to stick properly without some sanding or the use of a deglosser.

For what you are describing, I would repair any holes or divots, do some light sanding of anything sticking out, and then wipe down with a damp rag. If the wall is greasy or really dirty, I would wash with soap or better yet a tsp (Trisodium Phosphate) solution and rinse. I don't normally wash except in a kitchen (for grease) or outside.

The drywall if you are changing the color to a lighter color you probably should prime it. Otherwise just paint it. Going with a lighter color over a darker one might take three coats or more to cover without primer. If there is any ink stains on the walls then prime it with Kilz original oil based primer on those spots. For the woodwork I think latex is a poor product to use. I would use only an oil based enamel. The woodwork would need to be cleaned with a product like Krud Kutter Gloss Off. Even hand oils from handling the woodwork can interfere with the adhesion. It would also help to scuff sand the old paint with 220 grit or finer sandpaper. Sherwin Williams sells a "Glit" foam back sanding pad which works well for this purpose.

I used a under coating primer from Zinzer. Covered a whole lot of flaws including pencil and magic marker courtesy of the grandkids. Color paint, latex went on flawlessly
