painting with valspar implement paint.

i am going to paint my oliver 770. i was told to try valspar. now i am confused,by some of the articles ive read.valspar says i cannot reduce the grey sandable primer,is that right. valspar says mix the color 80/20 but the articles say 70/30 or even 60/40 using naptha. i have generally sprayed at 60 psi is that a good pressure for this type of paint.and last valspar says to paint primer than put the 1st coat of color on 24 hrs later,and 2nd coat 24 hrs later.i generally paint with automotive paint and waited 3 hrs per coat.so like i said this is really confusing. if any of you can help with some tips i would be very greatful.thx.jim

I personally loathe Valspar paint but with any alkyd paint or primer it is a good practice to not thin it any more than is necessary for your sprayer to spray it. The thinner breaks down the integrity of the paint and actually makes it take longer to dry. It doesn’t matter if it appears to orange peal while spraying it, the paint dries very slow and will flow out. Napha is what is recomended to thin for spraying. You might have better luck with green paint using Valspar paint. I painted a Kubota tractor with Valspar paint and you can almost see the color fading daily. Two years and it’s more white than orange.

i thin their primer with enough naptha to make it spray.. same with their paint. never had an adhesion issue. i've recoated up to 24 hrs later with no more prep, though I have recoated sooner too...

i have switched away from the valspar hardner and went with a nason synthetic enamil hardner. better results.. no more money.. faster cure.. less solvent lifting on touch up or spot cleanup

I would use an epoxy primer and use an automotive paint either PPG, Dupont or Martin Senour for the finish coat. Which ever of these you select use their epoxy primer. Hal

3 hours per coat?? Should be more like 15 minutes. Buy decent paint from PPG or DuPont, etc and follow the directions exactly -- you cannot go wrong.

I am certainly not an expert painter, but I like Oliver tractors, and the valspar paint is a poor color match. I used it on a baler years ago, and it faded very fast. If its a tractor you are keeping, I'd get better paint. I've used the Martin Senour (NAPA) crossfire line. It is their cheaper paint ($100 a gallon or so) but I've had good luck with it.
