Park brake, 806

About to load up 806 to move hay off field, went to lock park brake to hook up 3-point bale spike and would not even budge. Didnt try and force anything as not even a wiggle. Ideas?

Has the 806 been abused, like putting the park brake handle down when its still rolling a tad? That a big NO NO!

Well the Tractor Vet tucked tail and left us high and dry. I am no expert maybe Pete 23 will be along to chime in. Not a 100 percent certain but I think there may be a roll pin that can shear and cause this, but that may be some other shifting problem that happens to these. First link is a past post by the Vet but not necessarily about one that stuck in park. Second link is a Red Power post about a 1586 stuck in park, but it would have a spring loaded style park where an original 806 would have the over center style. If no one comes up with a direct answer web search ..yesterdays tractors IH 806 park brake lever.. a lot of results will come up. You can also search the same using red power as the site. Hope I have not muddied the waters.

Owned it for about 10 years and I always come to complete stop before applying park brake.

By not working do you mean the lever will not move or does it pull up without moving anything like it is broke? If not coming up then look into what I have written. If it moves like the lever is loose or broken then read down closer to the bottom. I would start by looking at the slot in that plate That turns with the shift rod at the bottom it keeps the whole thing from shifting and going into or out of park on the lever. there is a roll pin that holds that together so it turns . IF the plate is out of position you have a broke roll pin. IF the tractor is setting with to much pressure it can sometimes be a problem with pulling out of park harder than normal sometimes also. If none of this is a problem then look under the platform on the right side setting in the seat you can see the linkage to the park brake for broken or missing parts. Also look at the Bolt holding all the latch pivot in front and just under the platform where the park brake linkage pivots. I have had that bolt loosen up and let things wobble sideways and make things be goofy. If none of this is found to be bad. Then you will have to pull the platform off the 2 bolts in front you see under your feet and then 2 one on each side into the top of the brake drum. The brake and clutch springs. then you will see the park brake rod on the right side. The Linkage could be bent or the pin could be broke inside that pulls the rod up releasing the brake pawl. Though I doubt that is the problem. Call me if you need more help 989 413 5684 .

There is a 'safty cam' on the shift rod that must be exactly lined up inorder for the park lock to be engaged.It is located just ahead of the engageing lever on the other side of the steering support. You may have to remove the right battery to see it.

she she is not going to lock if you have the tractor in gear. if you played around with shifter's with tractor not running it wont go into lock. start tractor and shut off in nuetral then lock it.

Not trying to be smart but I grew up on IH. I know it must be in neutral and even in N the tabs below must line up. I moved 66 5 X 6 round bales with it today. The problem is the handle for the park brake, in the upper position, will not even wiggle, even with the shifter tabs lined up in N. I cannot engage the handle (lower it) to prevent it from rolling in N.

It is stuck in the upper position. Used it for about 4 hours moving round bales today. Biggest concern is safety but I can turn engine off in gear to prevent rolling or use loader down pressure to keep it still on fairly flat ground.

i ask because thats the way mine was when i got it. the lever was totally seized from not being used i would say. loosed it all and it works good. if you look under there its very easy to see whats happening.

Since you say the lever will not wiggle try removing the bolt holding the lever then oil it and try it. I can only imagine the lever and if it sat out has got moisture in there and rusted it stiff at this time. Does not seem like it would happen over night. Easiest thing I come up with at this time. If you have a TA in it I don't believe the gears will hold it as the TA is hydraulically activated.

If the tractor has a TA, turning the engine off will not prevent it from rolling away.

You're going to have to do some troubleshooting and investigation. Luckily it is not difficult to get at the linkages on an 806. Try loosening the pivot bolt for the park lever. Try disconnecting the linkage from the park lever. Does either allow the lever to move? If loosening the bolt works, the problem is at the lever. If disconnecting the linkage works the problem is further down and requires more troubleshooting.

Worst case you have to pull the platform and the range cover to get at the park pawl.

Finally it is not a "park brake" it is a park LOCK. A brake is a band or a disc. This is a latch (pawl) that engages the reverse gear teeth inside the transmission.

Had it parked in barn for maybe two weeks, not exposed to any weather, as some have asked. Only use it for moving round bales off fields and unloading off trailers.

Have you tried to troubleshoot the problem as I suggested?

If you figure out where it's stuck you'll probably see WHY it's stuck, and the fix will go from there.
