Parts cleaning fluid?

What do folks use to clean greasy engine parts with? Gas is too volitle. Kerosene takes the hide off my hands. Any suggestions?

We use to steam clean them at work. Pressure washer would remove a lot of grease and dirt. When they outlawed the steam jenny we got a Karcher pressure washer that used K1 kerosene to heat the water. It did a good job. Hal

Diesel fuel, mineral spirits, kerosine. The wife doesn't like the smell of any of them!

Mineral spirits is good, I would use denatured alcohol and see how that works.

Most places use Mineral Spirits in their "cleaning Solvents". Some add a little something more, but for the most part its just good ol' Mineral Sprirts.

Advantage to mineral spirits over kerosene is that the former leaves the surface dry, while kerosene leaves an oily film that then has to be removed with lacquer thinner before painting.

The shop I worked in used Varsol(Mineral Spirits) with a quart of ATF ..worked great, just blew the parts off with the air hose

We use varsol at work, smaller items we use isoblast, T solve, naptha, and alcohol. We use to use clorothene which leaves a perfect clean and dry surface.

oven cleaner can be good if you just want to clean off your motor and don"t have a pressure washer spray if on let it sit for a bit and hose off

I started using a concentrated soap like simple green for large parts. just use a brush and work into the greasy area, and use water to wash off. I use paint thinner for small stuff, but at over $7.00 a gal.it gets a little expensive. That is why I started using the soap. Stan

I have two quarts of Gunk sitting at my house and I don't like it I think it is a little ineffective I like Super clean general purpose cleaner but it contains sodium hydroxide (lye) which if used on aluminum parts it will have a "reaction" with them and it really does a number on your hands but I am for the first time using kerosene I will try mineral spirits and the atf it sounds kinda fun...

I use carburetor cleaner from Walmart. It usually costs around $1.50 or less a can. It will loosen and remove paint so you might remember this if it's a factor and you don't want that result. Other than that it cleans metal very well and dries without film or residue. It's good too for removing paint from your hands and it's about the only thing that will remove Sharpie ink from skin too. I use Sharpies a lot to mark stuff and sometimes get it on me, but the carb cleaner takes it right off. Follow this up with soap and water to prevent any possible skin irritation. Pat H.
