Pay Day

Made a trip to my local scrap yard today. I had 76 pounds of red brass @ 4.30, 62 pounds yellow brass @ 3.25 Don't think I did very good on my aluminum cans. I had three trash cans full. My receipt only shows I had 13 pounds. Need to watch my cans better next time. I am not collecting plastic bottles any more. To much work for so little. I had feed bags full of plastic bottles, trying to keep them dry and clean. for $11.00 not worth the trouble. Stan

Maine has a 5¢ returnable on most containers (except milk) and 15¢ on liquor. Mawteen and I used to walk a couple of miles every day, pick up the cans and bottles and redeem them when we had a batch. Not a fortune, but something to do when walking for exercise and a few bucks that usually went in the Christmas for the Great Grandkids fund.

Unfortunately, Maw's health has declined to the point where walking is no longer an option.

By was a 5 cents. They upped it to 10 cents now. I wonder if the tax payer is making up the subsidy.

Last time I took aluminum cans in for recycling, it wasn't much pay for a big load. Aluminum is so light weight that it takes a lot to get a little. I still pick up cans if it's convenient, but I don't go out of my way hunting for cans on the side of the road. Too little return for the time it would take to harvest them.

I didn’t know anyone paid for plastic. Not in my state anyhow.

It’s fun to collect the aluminum cans in a casual way and get a few bucks for it. Usually ends up a whopping $20 when I get my bags full enough to move out, but it’s something.

We turn in the tin cans at the same time, they aren’t worth anything but I believe get recycled in some way, not just landfill? They are complicated to recycle with glue on the outside, different layers of metal and sealants, and then a layer of plastic inside. Probably costs a lot per can to turn back into raw materials.

Think my state has some odd rules now on copper recycling, supposed to cut down on copper thieves, of course the real effect is to punish the honest guys with more rules and fees; and the bad guys find simple ways around the rules and no consequences to them anyhow.
