Pay pal question.

I have a person wanting to buy a tractor from me and wants to pay me by pay pal. I have never delt with pay pal, is this a good method, can I be scammed by it? What would you do? Thank you all in advance.

Well years ago a buddy sold some stuff on ebay and buyer used pay pal. Turned out it was a stolen credit card. Pay pal didn't pay my buddy !
I think it has more protection for a buyer than a seller.

I'd say cash when you come pick it up !!!!! Or if prepaid with a check hold it for at least the 2 weeks my bank requires for a check to clear.

Tell them to send you a check. Wait the mandatory ten days for it to clear. It isnt that hard for them to do it with a check. I still do it myself. Only positives.

Even then I have heard of a bank not honoring a bad check after it has cleared. I forget the circumstance but the seller was defrauded in the end.

I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong but can't a buyer claim the item was not as described, broken or failed to function and Paypal will give them their money back? Leaving the seller high and dry? If so too many ifs for me.

Just do a deposit of like a couple hundred dollars then tell them to bring the rest in cash. Thats wht i have done in the past

To answer you question PayPal so far to me is very safe, but in saying that anything can happen

yes the payment can be disputed on any of those grounds leaving the seller high and dry. Just depends on which side of the fence you are on....the seller or buyer. I would think cash is the way to go and to do the transaction in the police station parking lot for added security.

I've heard of them making a real cashiers check, making a copy of it, sending the copy, then after a bit they cash the real one.

Takes a while, banks eventually figure out yours is the bad one, and take your money back, even after it 'cleared'.

Like many others, when I sell it is $100 bills or a check that I know has cleared before item leaves my place. I do work with folks who I can tell are truly interested, if it's a weekend, or whatever, and they don't have that much cash on hand, I can understand that. We set up a time to return with payment and pick up item. All goes good that way.

A down payment via paypal is, as mentioned, a good way to go. Then cash is king or barter.

Trade for something you desire in your life. A new squirrel gun, a waverunner or similar.

sounds to me like he has never actually seen in person or drove the tractor . He wants the option to back out when he actually does drive it. An old tractor can and will have at least "SOMETHING" he can use against you as undisclosed before sale so paypal will not pay you. They will show he paid in your acct but when he protests they will NOT credit your bank. Since he has to come get it sometime, tell him to bring cash then. It isn't that "insecure". Whens the last time you heard of someone hauling a trailer getting stopped and robbed ? If he isn't "carrying" ...he should be.

Research the person . Here in Arkansas you can look up public record court cases for free . Traffic tickets , divorce , bankruptcy , civil cases , criminal cases , etc .

Be careful though . I looked up my name and found a dozen traffic tickets dating back to 1993 , but also found a few people with the same first and last name that had serious trouble . Different ages and locations but still close .

Just verifying a name , address , and usually length of time at that address helps .

Cash is good but you could still get scammed with counterfeit money . gather what info you can , follow your gut , take lots of pics as they load the tractor / equipment so you can I'd faces and vehicles if there is a problem .

Have a buddy come over for a witness and back up if need be , you never know . I move my game camera to area I am loading stuff .

I use paypal to pay for anything that takes it. It is good for the buyer, not the seller. They always side with the buyer. Buyer could claim something amiss and your money could be in limbo for a long time. Only safe way to sell is CASH at a bank so conterfeit is not ciable. Henry

Why does he want to use paypal? He probably thinks he can get his money back if he doesn't like the tractor. Paypal doesn't have all the protections it does on an ebay sale, that's why scammers use it. It's your tractor ,you decide how the payment should be, not the buyer. If it's mine I say cash on pickup, or a good check that clears the bank before it leaves. Plain and simple.

I'm not a member of PayPal, but after making my first purchase from eBay a few months ago, I've spoken with them and as eBay's official money handler, they say that they're going to get my money back. I bought a set of axles for one of my 4x4 Dodges from some guy out of New York, and just shy by two days of three months after having purchased them from the guy and having never received anything from the guy but excuses why I hadn't received them, the last excuse being that the shipper shipped them back to him because he supposedly shipped them with gear lube in them, I pulled the plug. I told eBay what happened, they transferred me to their money handler, PayPal and they told me that they would check into it to hear both sides of the story, and if I was correct, and I know that I am, they would go after the guy. They have the records of my credit card purchase for the axles, and there will certainly be no record of my having received any shipment that never happened. I'll be watching my credit card statements closely since I paid by credit card, but the payment actually went to PayPal and then PayPal paid the seller, not from me to the seller directly.

Given what happened to me, I suspect that the guy intends to use PayPal to keep you honest...not saying that you aren't. I'm guessing that the guy is either an experienced buyer or has been burned or both. In my case, I was an inexperienced buyer that got burned my one and only time out through eBay. I'm in no hurry for a repeat, so I won't be buying anything through eBay anytime soon. I work too hard for my money to choose some unknown schmuck on the internet to give it to.

Good luck.

Mark

Wire Transfer. Not an ACH Transfer. Ask JDSeller, he knows about them for large transactions. You can verify with your bank that the money is there. Cash is always good also, but most people are not comfortable carrying even $5,000 in cash.
