My son put his truck for sale on Craigslist.a guy 2500 miles away wants it but wants to pay with pay pal.what does he have to be aware of?or should he pass?

Paypal is like any other credit card in most things. With paypal you credit information/numbers are not transferred over the internet with the transaction therefor there is no way for someone to steel your credit information.

I would accept paypal. Once he gets the money in his bank he might take it out so if the guy tries something paypal can't just remove it.

Yes it takes four days for me to get the funds into my bank account. If you buy something using your paypal account to pay the funds are available right away.

Very possible fees may apply to transaction amount.
Google says this.

There's no fee to use PayPal to purchase goods or services. However, if you receive money for goods or services (such as from selling an item on eBay), the fee for each transaction is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the amount you receive

If worried about it, ask for a bank check

I had same issue when trying to sell my truck. I said NO PayPal. Was concerned once buyer drove my truck away all he had to do was cancel sale through PayPal and I was out a truck and a payment. I told him cash only and he never responded.

Be careful of a cashiers bank check. Make sure your bank checks on that bank. I had one, thankfully our bank checked it out before depositing it and found it had fraudulent numbers on it. If deposited, would have had my bank account identity.

While the buyer MIGHT be legit, a dishonest buyer could dispute the condition that he claims you stated in the posting and the transaction could be held up for weeks.
If you really want your money, demand cash.

Most of the paypal offers are scams. My experience is the buyer is out of country and wants to buy for friend or relative. Cashiers check can be fake. Cash is the best option. Get your bank to verify bills are not counterfeit before releasing vehicle and title.

Pass on it. A paypal buyer has 180 days to contest a transaction. I use paypal often, it is great for the purchaser, it stinks for the seller.

Have his banker deal with your banker. I have sold vehicles across the country that way... My banker will not send them a title till he has the money secure, when its secure and I have cashed it out the title goes in the mail. The buyer can have it picked up Its the best for both parties...

Ya he claims he's in the military and not currently in the US.right! I knew you guys on here would know all the ins and outs of these different transactions.thanks

I wouldn't take PP on a high dollar sale. All the buyer has to do is claim you misrepresented the condition the truck was in. It can be anything, from an oil leak to a rip in the seat. Then the seller has to give a refund.

It doesn't do any good to transfer the money from your PP account to your bank. If your PP account doesn't have enough for a refund. PP will either charge it to your credit card or debit your bank account.

We sold a truck for my brother, at the side of our driveway, to a couple here in town, and many of the hundred-dollar bills were actually good. But many were not. I could not get the police interested, but the bank sure was interested. Long-short, even if you take cash, get one of those pen-marker pens and check every bill to see if it's counterfeit. Best of luck. {I pounded on the front door of the people, and demanded our money back. Got it, too.]

Agree with most others but for fun question him ask him how he is going to pick it up. If it's a low dollar item askim why he is coming 2500 miles. If he is our of country or in military ask him why he needs it!!

Don't do it. It's a scam.

On Craigslist if you don't meet face to face, and deal in cash, then it's almost certainly a scam. It's not worth the risk on the slim chance that the person is legitimate.
