Are any of these gravity fed or in any other way operate without electrictiy?

I dont see how the auger would work without a small electric motor. You need the auger to churn the pellets to burn it right and the feed auger to load it from the hopper. I have an American harvest multi-fuel burner.

All I've seen are electrically controlled. However, several have battery backups in case of a power outage.

I'm asking because I'm currently the civil military affairs officer for a manuever unit in Kosovo. This entire country is heated with wood stoves. The land and climate is similar to southern Iowa/Northern Missouri. Our area of operations includes two fairly large municipal areas. It's mind boggling to look down on either of these two cities and think about them being entirely heated with wood. I'm told, and I'll soon find out myself, that the smog from the stoves is something to behold. I've found a couple mom and pop sawmills already and have access to some operational and non-governmental funds that could set up pellet manufacturing plants. The next step would be introducing pellet stoves, but if they're dependant on electricity it's hopeless-the power plants are a communist era hold-over with brown and black outs a normal occurance. Ideas?

Hmmmmm.....I see your dilema.
I would stick with the wood stoves, as long as there is plenty of wood. In my area of Michigan firewood is cheaper then wood pellets.

in general, good luck with that project... there is a model out there that does not need electricity. It has a "heat" generator that once the stove is going. I don"t remember the brand, so you"ll have to google it. My pellet stove supposidly takes 1amp to run and 2 amps to start (automatic start). I use a car battery and inverter to power my boiler instead as the battery will run that 1/25HP motor along time and fire the stove backup when the power comes back. There are areas of Europe that have really embraced pellets and even deliver them in bulk to schools, hospitals office buildings ect ect. I"d sell them only stoves that will burn grains and wood pellets for them to be flexible.
